STREAKERS HIT ROYAL POLO

Prince Charles got in a royal flush yesterday(27 July 2008 ) as streakers caused uproar at a polo match.

Charles and a celebrity-packed crowd watched as the trio ran naked from the grandstand and sprinted on to the turf during a match between England and Australia at Windsor Great Park.

Two of the streakers were swiftly grabbed and away - as one official joked: "We do have a dress code here." But to the delight of the cheering spectators, the third man gave stewards the runaround.

The streakers could be seen on the event's big screen

Three male streakers invaded the pitch being watched by the Prince of Wales during an annual socA polo player on a horse and a naked man on a big screeniety polo event.

The naked trio emerged from the grandstand during a match between England and Australia at the Cartier International event in Windsor.

Two returned to the stand but the third was cheered as he fled stewards and hurdled two metal barriers to escape.

Prince Charles, who was overseeing the event in place of the Queen, watched the spectacle from the royal box.

The Cartier International, held at the Guards Polo Club within the grounds of Windsor Great Park, is one of the most glamorous dates in the social calendar.

Some 25,000 people attended the event, which took place on the hottest day of the year so far.

The intervention of the streakers, who stripped off during the final chukka, temporarily halted play

As they floundered after him, he even cheekily bent down to touch his toes in a mock exercise stretch. Then he nimbly jumped two fences and ran off. Charles, who was overseeing the annual Cartier International match in place of the Queen, watched the fun from the Royal Box alongside Bond girl Rosamund Pike and Harry Potter actress Emma Watson.

Singer Natalie Imbruglia, burlesque artist Dita von Teese, model Kelly Brook and actress Stefanie Powers were also in the crowd at the Guards Polo Club.

With an air of cool sophistication that belied her age, the star of the Harry Potter films Emma Watson managed to stand out even amongst the cream of high society.

The actress, just 18, maintained a look of unflustered elegance as temperatures soared above 80F at the Cartier International Polo Day, an event that has come to even outshine Royal Ascot Ladies Day on the social calendar.

Prince Charles oversaw the annual match between England against Australia held at the Guards Polo Club within the grounds of Windsor Great Park. Three male streakers invaded the pitch watched by the Prince of Wales at an annual society polo event today.

During the final chukka the trio stripped off, emerged from the grandstand and ran on to the turf during a match between England and Australia at the Cartier International event at Windsor.

Two fled back into the stand but the other drew cheers from the crowd as he sidestepped chasing stewards and hurdled two metal barriers to escape.

The Prince of Wales, who was overseeing the event in place of the Queen, watched the spectacle from the Royal Box where celebrities including Bond girl Rosamund Pike and Harry Potter actress Emma Watson were also sitting.

Charles, wearing a cream suit and sunglasses, walked out at half-time to join in the tradition of stamping down the divots on the field caused by the horses’ hooves.

Despite the streakers’ intervention, which temporarily halted play, England went on to win 10-9 and lift the trophy.

Afterwards England team captain Luke Tomlinson said of the streakers: “It is not the first time I have played in a match where we’ve had a streaker and you are so focused on the game you hardly notice.

“It brings a bit of humour in and the crowd seem to enjoy it.”

A spokeswoman for the club said: “I think it is the hot weather and the Pimms to blame. These things happen.

“We will have asked them to put their clothes back on because we do have a dress code.”

The Guards Polo Club, one of the most prestigious in the world, is based at Smiths Lawn, in Windsor Great Park, near Windsor Castle.

The Duke of Edinburgh has been President of the club since its formation in 1955 but he is not so keen on the noise and crowds of the club’s biggest event.

The Queen and the Princes Harry and William may have been absent but the day was still blessed with the kind of mixture of Royalty, celebrity and aristocracy that only a British establishment event can muster.

The prestigious Cartier tent, this year designed by Nicky Haslam, the Royal posse did their best to make up for their missing friends.

Sam Branson, Sir Richard's son, sporting a new mohawk, Tom Van Straubenzee and Guy Pelly feasted on lunch prepared by celebrity chef Anton Mosimann (scallops, followed by rack of lamb), washed down with industrial quantities of Cartier's Cuvee.

Across the field at the Chinawhite tent, an edgier crowd led by the supermodel Agyness Deyn, Miss Watson and shoemaker to the stars Jimmy Choo chilled out to music by DJ Mark Ronson, the man credited with catapulting Amy Winehouse to stardom.

As always, few of the 35,000-strong crowd present paid much attention to the game. And as always, the guests from the two reigning hospitality tents, barely left their cossetted confines.

But the heat did take its toll.

Alongside the paying public, the Rothschilds, the Bransons, the model Caprice, Salman Rushdie and his female consort soon began to show signs of discomfort, their carefully considered outfits wilting in the heat.

Frenzied fanning followed with programmes or serviettes, anything guests could get their hands on to fight the perspiration.

Some even took to their air conditiojned cars for a break from the sun, while used umbrellas shield them from the sun.

Match-goers took advantage by holding picnics and sipping Pimms on lawns surrounding the grand stands.

Among those attending were pop star Natalie Imbruglia, rugby star Matt Dawson, Top Gear presenter Richard Hammond and Bond Girl Rosamand Pike.

It was only when the sun finally went down that the disheveled crowd cut loose, with festivities continuing at Mayfair nightclub Whisky Mist.

Friday's remote solar eclipse will be on Internet

Friday's remote solar eclipse will be on Internet

By SETH BORENSTEIN, AP Science Writer Mon Jul 28, 5:16 PM ET

WASHINGTON - A total solar eclipse will darken some of Earth's skies on Friday, but geography, weather, the economy and even the Olympics are combining to make it a hard and expensive for people to see it.

The total blotting out of the sun, which occurs when the moon's dark inner shadow falls on parts of the Earth, can only be seen in mostly remote places: the northeastern edge of Canada, the tip of Greenland, parts of Russia, China and Mongolia, including the famed Gobi desert. For those who can't be there, it will be shown live on the Internet.

Some of the areas where the eclipse will last the longest — including parts of the Arctic — have a 75 percent chance of bad weather that will make it tough to see. This eclipse at its peak will last for 2 minutes and 27 seconds.

Yet eclipse chasers can't wait for the sky to darken, animals to howl and people to stare in awe.

"It's so rare and unusual, it's unfortunate to pass up any chance," said NASA astrophysicist Fred Espenak, who has been chasing eclipses since 1970 and has his own Mr. Eclipse Web site and a NASA solar eclipse Web site. Espenak will be in northern China to watch the eclipse with a tour group.

The Olympics, which start a week later in Beijing, are making it expensive and difficult to get plane tickets and hotel rooms, Espenak said. And the world's economy and fuel prices are making it even tougher, so fewer people are going, said Richard Fienberg, editor emeritus of Sky and Telescope magazine and spokesman for the American Astronomical Society.

Past eclipse tours cost around $1,000 to $2,000, but many of the China tours are $3,000 to $6,000, plus airfare. To join Fienberg on a Russian icebreaker that includes a North Pole stop costs about $23,000.

There is a a cut-rate closer to home option.

"The northeastern part of Maine will see a little bit of this eclipse right at sunrise," Espenak said.

And the eclipse can also be seen remotely. Museums, such as the Exploratorium in San Francisco, will have eclipse events. NASA, the Exploratorium and others will broadcast the eclipse live on the Internet. It reaches its peak at 7:09 a.m. EDT.

Next year's total solar eclipse — July 22, 2009 — will be more southern and last the longest of the 21st Century: 6 minutes, 39 seconds. But it will be during monsoon season and can be seen, only if the weather cooperates, in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Myanmar, China and the Pacific Ocean.

  • Britney Spears Detailed Biography
Born on 2nd December 1981, Kentwood, Louisiana, USA. One of the last teenage superstars of the millennium, Spears enjoyed her breakthrough success at the end of 1998. She appeared in local dance revues and church choirs as a young girl, and at the age of eight auditioned for The Mickey Mouse Club. Although she was too young to join the series, a producer on the show gave her an introduction to a New York agent. She subsequently spent three summers at the Professional Performing Arts School Center. She appeared in a number of off-Broadway productions as a child actor, including Ruthless (1991). She returned to the [ Walt ] Disney Channel for a spot on The Mickey Mouse Club, where she was featured for two years between the ages of 11 and 13. She began to audition for pop bands in the New York area, her demo tapes eventually landing on the desk of Jive Records' Jeff Fenster. ''Her vocal ability and commercial appeal caught me right away,'' he recalls. She was expensively groomed by Jive, who put her in the studio with Eric Foster White (producer and writer for Boyzone, Whitney Houston and others). They employed top R&B writer Max Martin (of Backstreet Boys fame) to produce her debut single, ''... Baby, One More Time'', and an album of the same title. They also set up a promotional free phone number where fans could listen to Spears' music and interviews throughout the summer of 1998. She toured American venues for a series of concerts sponsored by US teen magazines, eventually joining 'N Sync on tour. The careful planning paid off when her debut album and single went on to top the American charts at the start of 1999. The album and single enjoyed similar success in the UK and Europe. The ballad ''Sometimes'' and the funky ''(You Drive Me) Crazy'' were also substantial transatlantic hits. ''Born To Make You Happy'' topped the UK charts in January 2000. The demand for new Spears material was satisfied when her sophomore set, Oops! ... I Did It Again, was released in May. The album contained the expected quota of well-produced, expertly crafted pop songs alongside a risible cover version of (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction.

Jennifer Lopez: Celebrates her 39th birthday

On Thursday singing sensation Jennifer Lopez celebrates her 39th birthday in quite a low profile manner along with her darling hubby Marc Anthony.

Reporters have grabbed more information about Jennifer Lopez’s birthday celebration. While giving interview to a popular media channel on Friday Jennifer Lopez said , "It's almost like every day is her birthday ... so last night we just wanted it to be quiet and, you know, have a nice quiet evening together."

The couple snuck into the Tony-winning musical ‘In the Heights’ and got "to sit in an audience and watch other people be nervous." This bit of information is put forth by Marc Anthony himself.

When asked about touring with babies called Max and Emme, Anthony said, "When your foundation is stable and you're good, it doesn't really affect anything. It just amplifies what the experience feels like. It's that much more fulfilling, and you look forward to coming home. It's a great time."

Load XP on a Vista Computer!

Load XP on a Vista Computer!

    Virtual PC

Contrary to popular belief you can load xp on your new vista machine. Microsoft allows you to do this through emulation software. If you were to reformat then there is always the question of whether the drivers will load on the xp machine. This is because the hardware manufactures do not always create drivers for the xp software. More times than not if you were to do the traditional thing and reformat then you would have more problems than not.

Microsoft has created something to combat this problem. This solution is called Virtual PC. This allows you to basically use your vista machine as a host for almost any microsoft operating system. In simple terms it creates a pocket and fakes out the pc to think that it is rebooting and loading vista. So, the way it works is that you turn on your vista machine, click on the virtual pc icon, then click on whatever you name the xp emulator. Then a couple of hot keys and your screen changes over to show your familar xp window. This also means that the programs that are not compatable with your windows vista machine are now usable again on the xp emulated machine! Upon exiting you have the choice to save all the changes that you make within the operating system or delete the changes. So if you want to go into xp and see how a program reacts, but don’t want to necessarly keep it this option will allow that. This will also keep you from having to reformat due to viruses. If you obtain a virus while inside the emulator you just need to do is check the box ”do not save changes” then that virus is no more.

You can download it yourself at Microsoft’s Virtual Pc.

The Great Cricketer With Real Buddhist Mind !

    Sidath Wettimuny:

The Great Cricketer With Real Buddhist Mind !

Music and sport, a winning combination

Sharmini talks about life with veteran cricketer Sidath Wettimuny:

    lakmal@sundayobserver.lk

Cricket and Symphony Orchestra, a blend of two extremes, has been `rhyming well in the field’ for the past 20 years for Sidath and Sharmini Wettimuny who have a lot to talk about.

    Pix:Chinthaka Kumarasinghe

Sidath, one time Romeo or the dream suitor of many young

princesses both the Cricket lovers as well as non-lovers, has been steady with his love for Sharmini. “After a seven year affair we got married on June 4 in 1988,” says Sharmini beginning her life story with Sidath.

“I’ve heard about him a lot from my friends. Though I was also a Cricket fan, I had a little interest in him as a cricketer when I as a teenager,” she continues.

Sharmini Tara de Silva was born on November 1 in 1961 to Charitha Prasanna de Silva, a top pioneer figure in the business management in Sri Lanka and Shusheela Paul at Nawala.

“I was the middle among two brothers. My parents led a wonderful married life and gave us a lot of comfort, love, security and happiness. My mother was a Masters graduate of Smith College, USA, and taught earlier. She sacrificed her job in order to give us, her children the fullest attention which was followed by me as well, when I quit my Banking job after my son’s birth,” she smiles.

Sharmini’s father who was honoured with `Deshamanya’ recently has rendered an immense service to the country by being the pioneer to introduce many new business ventures. He was the Chairman of Aitken Spence group for many years, and pioneered the leasing business by forming LOLC.

His service was appreciated by the Japanese government who honoured him with the `Order of the Rising Sun’ - Gold and Silver stars from Emperor Hirohito in 1998, the highest honour given to any foreigner. Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher and Helmut Kohl were the other foreign recipients who received this honour that year.

“And my father was the only Asian who received this that year and has been the only Sri Lankan to receive it so far,” says Sharmini proudly.

Question:You seem to be really proud of your father?

Sharmini: Why not? I grew up with him as my role model.

Sharmini had her education at Ladies’ College, Colombo and was one of the brightest stars in the school. She was the Head Prefect and House Captain in 1980.

The same year she was the Leader of the Choir and Leader of the Debating Society. Except Cricket, Sharmini did many other sports including Tennis and Swimming. “We hadn’t heard of women cricket at that time,” she laughs.

Sharmini was a much involved and active student at school. Music was her forte though she excelled in the Maths and Economic stream. Following her mother’s footsteps, Sharmini entered Smith College, Massachusetts, USA and graduated in Magna Cum Laude degree.

“There too I was involved in the university Choir. My stay at Smith College was memorable as those three and half years were really enjoyable. The course was four years, and we were allowed to do one year of it in an university in UK. So, I entered University College, London, and did my third year where I also got the opportunity to take part in an operetta - `Gwendoline’ by Chabriere,” she recalls.

Sharmini returned to Sri Lanka in 1984, and commenced work at Citibank N.A. as the first female Sri Lankan Executive Officer in which she handled and headed many responsible sections while getting training in Singapore, India, Philippines and Malaysia on Financial Institution and other banking affairs. Sharmini was the first Sri Lankan Citibanker to be sent to New York for training at the Citibank Centre in 1986.

Question:After holding that sort of lucrative post with many of such rare opportunities, how did you feel when you quitted it?

Sharmini: Hmm... I had everything to the fullest. I saw how my Mom sacrificed her job for us. And it was my turn to take the same decision. I wanted to be a good mother to my children.

Since 2006, Sharmini has been the (Honorary) Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka, the only Orchestra that performs regularly in this whole SAARC region.

“There are 300 permanent members of Sri Lanka. We do a lot for the prevalence of the Western classical music. We all perform with love for music and not for money. We are trying to publicise it among schoolchildren within suburbs and outstations as well. Our next concert, `Young Soloist’ will be held at Ladies College in August,” she says.

In addition Sharmini was the Choir Director (Honorary) from 1998 to 2000, and accompanist for the Ladies’ College Choir.

    Question:Your meeting with him?

    Sharmini: Interesting...(laughs)

Sidath Wettimuny was born on August 12 in 1956 as the fourth of five boys to Ramsay Gregory de silva Wettimuny, (Wettimuny Senior) Mechanical Engineer cum a Buddhist Scholar and Indrani de Silva at Park Road, Colombo. Sunil, Mitra, Ranjan, Sidath and Nimal, the five sons of Wettimuny family marked Sri Lankan history in many ways.

Except Ranjan all the others played Cricket, and among them Sunil, Mitra and Sidath were Opening Batsmen for Sri Lanka while Nimal was restricted to Club Cricket. Sunil chose his career as a pilot while the other brothers got involved in the lucrative garment industry.

Sidath’s father who was an enthusiastic cricketer encouraged his sons a lot in taking up with sports, though he didn’t live to see his sons excellent performances. Sidath was 17 years when his father passed away. Wettimuny Senior was the engineer who constructed the train for the foreign film `Bridge over the river Kwai’ shot here at Kithulgala in 1960s.

He was a learned figure who had a versatile knowledge of all the religions and philosophies. He wrote many books introducing the relationship between Science and Buddhism. Seated at his father’s feet Sidath was used to listen to his long Dhamma discussions with his learned colleagues since he was a small boy.

Ananda College, Colombo taught Sidath Cricket and gave the Buddhist background and discipline. He did his A/Ls in the Commerce stream, but opted to a career as a professional Cricketer. He first represented his school, at the age of 10 and held the captaincy for Ananda College in 1975.

He won the All Island Best Batsman of the Year Award (school cricket) in 1974-75. Sidath represented Sri Lanka in Cricket from 1977 to 1987. Some of his cricketing highlights are that he scored the first test century for Sri Lanka in Faisalabad, Pakistan in 1982, scoring 157.

He was the first Sri Lankan to carry his bat through in both a Test match in New Zealand, and a One Day International in Sri Lanka against England. His highest Test score of 190 is a record even today, as the highest score made by a batsman in his country’s first Test appearance at Lords, the Mecca of Cricket.

He was also the first Sri Lankan to be named Wisden Cricketer for the Year in 1984-1985. His highest First Class score was 227 not out for Sri Lanka against India in 1987. Sidath was honoured by the Jaycees in 1985 as one of the Ten Top personalities of the Year. No doubt about that as it was stated above, he was one of the most adored dream princes who stole many hearts.

Sidath has served on three past Interim Committees for Cricket and he held the membership at the ICC Cricket Committee and ICC Board representing Sri Lanka. He has been both a selector and Chairman of Selectors for Cricket and an ICC Match Referee after retiring from Cricket. He was made an Honorary Life Member of two of the most prestigious cricket clubs in the world - the MCC in London the Cricket Club of India in Bombay, for his past cricketing achievements.

Sidath is currently the President of the Sri Lanka Cricketers Association and a member of the current Interim Committee at Sri Lanka Cricket.

Question:That was all about him. Why not reveal your romance with him?

Sharmini: I first heard about him when I was attending Oosha’s class of ballet. I was about 13 years then. It was just some information. But, I first met him at the Grindlay’s Bank Manager’s place at Queen’s Road in 1977. My father was invited attend to this function where both England and Sri Lankan Cricket teams were also graced.

Though the invitation was for my parents, I jumped to the idea as I was a Cricket fanatic at that time, but didn’t have any `enthusiastic hero’ as such in my mind. So, my mother `donated’ her invitation to me(laughs). I attended to it with my father, and Sidath was introduced to me there for the first time.

Question:What was your first impression about him?

Sharmini: Hmmm.... he was handsome and looking good (laughs). Very impressive, I have to be honest. Also he seemed to be very shy. I just shook hands with him as I did with other Cricketers.

    Question:Your second meeting?

Sharmini: Oh! you need all that (laughs)? Well we were residing at Nawala, we had an informal friends’ club called `Nawala Lane Friends’ which included all our playmates residing at the lane we stayed. Thushantha has been a mutual friend of mine since I was a kid.

His birthday falls on November 4. He and Sidath were schoolmates at Ananda. So, both Sidath and I were invited to his birthday party, and it was the second time I met him. We introduced ourselves and started to talk. Sidath had found my phone number and called me after two days.

He was good looking, and I was excited to receive a call from him. So, that was it. I had a very strong interest in Cricket. That was something common between us. We had a month to talk to each other as he had to go to India with his Cricket, and before he returned I flew to USA for my higher studies.

We used to write and phone each other once a week as we didn’t have SMS facilities and Chatting Computer facilities as today’s lovers. All his Cricket money might have been spent on our massive phone bills (laughs).

Question:Both of you have been coming from two different backgrounds. How did it affect your relationship?

Sharmini: It did affect at the beginning. He was from a strong Buddhist background while mine was a devoted Anglican set up. Both were influential families, so that we had to face a lot of obstacles and disturbances. Even Sidath was not sure whether I would fit in with his culture.

However, I would frankly state about his mother who has always been ready to accept me since she first met me. Her love and care played a vital role in the relationship of Sidath and mine. Seven years...(pauses) quite a long time. We don’t regret as we got the opportunity to know each other well. We tied the knot at lavish wedding at Hotel Hilton finally (smiles).

Question:Married life with a famous personality?

Sharmini: Never been problem as we have had good communication skills since the very inception. Thanks to the mobile phone facilities, we are in touch with each other throughout. He is the Vice Chairman of his own family business, the Nobles Group of Companies.

He could spend a lot of time at home as he manages his factory managerial work through the phone. That’s relaxing. Sidath is a person who is very particular about his physical fitness. Very calm and revered personality. He meditates a lot. It was he who taught me the importance of being mindful. He is very special. In his thoughts and actions - he is extraordinary generous. He is very good with people, and maintains an excellent PR with anybody. He rarely holds anything against anybody, and is unusually good. Sidath practises what he believes in wholeheartedly.

    Question:Rumours?

Sharmini: I might have been told, but I couldn’t remember anything that bothered me. We have a good understanding. Music is our common subject. I play the piano and he is an excellent singer. In fact he released a VCD of Buddhist songs recently. I practise my religion and he does his. Apart from that we are both involved in charity work a lot.

Both our children are Buddhists. Our son, Sanjay is 18 years now, and is doing a degree in Aviation in New South Wales for a commercial pilot licence. He wants to be a pilot. Sanjay was a Junior National Golf player and represented Sri Lanka junior golf. He played Cricket and swam for the school. Our daughter Shamara is 17 years, and is very versatile. She is extremely good in sports, dancing and singing. She is the current football captain and Prefect of the school. Both my children are at the Colombo International School.

    Question:Future plans?

Sharmini: To lead a good life while doing my best to promote the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka.

‘Mega’ tele series creates havoc In Sri Lanka

    ‘Mega’ tele series creates havoc

    By Sarashi Samarasinghe
‘Mega’ tele series have created havoc in the tele-drama industry today, with many prominent actors and actresses in the field opining that such series were a disturbance to the progress of the industry.

Tele-drama makers voiced their protest along with several of Sri Lanka’s actors and actresses, art directors, technicians, producers, directors and script writers at the Public Library Auditorium on June 5.

“This type of television series first started after Indian mega productions were introduced to the local market by a particular TV channel,” said Tele Makers Guild Treasurer Bennet Ratnayake.

He said that the Tele Makers Guild initially looked at the matter indifferently since they thought that it would be a good challenge to the Indian mega productions. “We thought that these mega tele series would stop after reaching a certain limit,” said Ratnayake.

Ratnayake said that at present there are 12 mega tele series being broadcast over four TV channels and that if this amount were increased with another three mega series, the opportunity of becoming a versatile tele drama creator would be lost forever.
“A total of 107 episode tele-dramas are being put away each year due to these 12 mega tele series, and employment opportunities of 5,885 artistes have been destroyed to date,” said Ratnayake.

Actress, Producer and Director, Sriyani Amarasena said that she had brought up the matter with several other personalities who were involved in these mega productions.
“I asked an actress, a script writer and a director what they thought about this matter and they had various ideas,” said Amarasena.

They had all maintained that they got involved in these mega series because of the financial gains and that they gained no satisfaction from such productions.

“In the period of the 1960s and 1970s, Sinhala cinema received unlimited responses from the audience. Later on it all vanished due to the breakdown of the local film industry. Now the same tragedy has taken place again in the tele-drama industry,” said Amarasena.

She said that such disasters occur when the standards of the creations fall apart.
“Mega tele series serve no purpose. They have no point. They are given the tag ‘mega,’ and they simply drags on for years and years with no ending,” said critic Tissa Abeysekara.
Abeysekara further stated that apart from government television channels, all other TV channels in the country were dependent on the income they receive from TV commercials. “Profits are decided on according to the amount of commercials they air,” said Abeysekara.

He further said that weren’t many good tele-dramas being produced these days and that most of the tele-dramas that were being produced were useless.
“The mega merchants are uprooting the tele-drama industry in Sri Lanka and destroying its fruits,” said Actress Duleeka Marapana.

According to Actor Janak Premalal, a tele-drama production should be based on a very sensitive theme and inspire humane feelings. “The main intention of producing a tele drama is not to show the faces of the actors or actresses close up on the screen,” said Premalal.

Former Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation Chairman cum Actor Sanath Gunatilleke said that such a sorry state had come about since there was no permanent national policy in place with regard to the industry.
He pointed out that it was important to come up with such a policy, which he said would help overcome the problems that the industry is facing today.

Family matters and love relationships>>> Kinduru Kodewwa

    Family matters and love relationships

    By Sarashi Samarasinghe
It is a story of two young hearts falling in love, respected elders becoming emotional and a helpless mother in search of her ownership rights.

‘Kinduru Kodewwa’ is a combination of it all.
Ananda is involved in gambling and he gets scolded frequently from his wife Susila because of this reason. The family has got two children ,the eldest son is Niroshan and the youngest daughter is Gayesha. Niroshan is presently employed at a Company while Gayesha is still continuing her studies. Niroshan spends a lot of money for his sisters’ education. Ananda and his family survive through the pension which Ananda receives and through Niroshans’ income.

Adjoining Ananda’s house is another family. They are Edward and Sriyani, who have one daughter named as Nimasha. Nimasha wants to start a relationship with Niroshan whereas Sriyani after observing her daughters’ behaviour keeps a close eye on her. As a result there are frequent verbal exchanges between mother and daughter.

There is a boarding house in between these two houses where a young foolish boy named Sarath resides. He keeps trying to build a relationship with Nimasha but Nimasha does not respond. Sriyani gets hold of a parcel which has been kept by Sarath to be given to for Nimasha. Sarath meets Nimasha’s father and conveys to him that he is interested in getting married to Nimasha. Nimashas’ parents rejects Sarath’s proposal saying that he has neither a stable employment nor a permanent residence. Edward and Sriyani challenges Sarath to earn more money and become wealthy. Sarath accepts their challenge and moves away.

One of Niroshans’ friends, Kumudu gets interested in Nimasha and he rings her up all the time saying that he is trying to help her to find a job.

Parallel to these incidents, there is a rich family. The father, Wasantha, is a wealthy gentleman and has recently come down from abroad. He loves his family very much.
Wasanthas’ wife is Rebecca and his only daughter is Sachini.

This house is always being visited by a western influenced, rich, educated young friendly businessman Sujeewa. Sujeewa indicates to Sachini that he has some kind of affection towards her because they have known each other from childhood..

Sachini attends computer classes which Niroshans’ sister also attends. One day Sachini and Niroshan meet each other by coincidence and they fall in love.

Their love meets with great objections. As time passes Sujeewa gets to know about Sachinis’ and Niroshans’ affair where as Sujeewa visits Niroshans’ office to discuss about this matter. Later Sujeewa realizes he is not going to receive Sachnis’ love and he suppresses his sadness and helps Sachini and Niroshan to carry on their relationship.

As the story flows down, one day, Ananda who is extremely involved in gambling gets himself caught up in a quarrel and injures his head.. Ananda visits the court house to give evidence regarding this matter and was later kept behind bars.
Some time later an unknown woman speaks to Wasantha regarding her ownership.

The popular "POO" - Kung Fu Panda in action

    Kung Fu Panda in action
    By Susitha R. Fernando
    ---------The Sunday times

One of the highest grossing films in 2008, ‘Kung Fu Panda', about a panda who aspires to be a Kung Fu warrior is now being screened at the Majestic cinema in Colombo. The animated film about a bear named 'Po' with a passion for martial arts has become a huge hit in China.

Globally, the movie has earned $275 million in just two weeks. Released on June 6, the action animation is directed by Mark Osborne and John Stevenson. The film premiered at the 61st Cannes Film Festival where it received a good response with massive and sustained applause at the end of the film's screening.

Enthusiastic, big and a little clumsy, Po is the biggest fan of Kung Fu around...which doesn't exactly come in handy while working every day in his family's noodle shop. Unexpectedly chosen to fulfill an ancient prophecy, Po's dreams become reality when he joins the world of Kung Fu and studies alongside his idols, the legendary Furious Five -- Tigress, Crane, Mantis, Viper and Monkey -- under the leadership of their guru, Master Shifu. But before they know it, the revengeful and treacherous snow leopard Tai Lung is headed their way, and it's up to Po to defend everyone from the oncoming threat.
Can he turn his dreams of becoming a Kung Fu master into reality? Po puts his heart - and his girth - into the task, and the unlikely hero ultimately finds that his greatest weaknesses turn out to be his greatest strengths.

The film stars the voices of Jack Black, Jackie Chan, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen, David Cross and Ian McShane. Animated by Dreamworks and distributed by Paramount Pictures, the film created controversy in China though it made one of the strongest movies in China in recent years with a grossing of more than $12 million after less than two weeks of its release.

Some Chinese critics has demanded to protest the film because Steven Spielberg, a top executive at DreamWorks, had resigned last February as artistic adviser to the 2008 Beijing Olympics after failing to persuade Chinese officials to do more to help the Darfur region of Sudan.

Another group, backed by the Chinese artist Zhao Bandi, who uses pandas as an inspiration for his work, also called for a boycott, saying the animated film was exploiting a national symbol.

"There is footage being shot of Britney some time this week in conjunction with Madonna's upcoming (Sticky & Sweet) tour," Madonna's publicist, Liz Rosenberg, said in an e-mail Tuesday to The Associated Press. "That is all the information I have available. The rest is `a secret.'"

Rosenberg denied reports that Spears, 26, is shooting a music video.

Madonna guest starred in a music video for Spears' single "Me Against the Music" in 2003. The singers stirred up controversy that year with an open-mouth kiss at the MTV Video Music Awards.

Madonna, 49, will kick off her tour Aug. 23 in Cardiff, Wales, and wind through European destinations including London and Paris before jumping to the U.S. in October.
