2011 Cricket World Cup Opening Ceremony in Bangladesh - VIDEOS

2011 Cricket World Cup Opening Ceremony in Bangladesh

Cricket is a great sport and the Cricket World Cup is the highlight of every cricket lover’s year. This time the event, which is held every four years, will be even more memorable for cricket lovers living in Bangladesh.

On February 18, 2009, Haroon Lorgat, the Chief Executive of the International Cricket Council, announced that the opening ceremony of the 2011 Cricket World Cup will be held in Bangladesh. The event will take place almost exactly two years from now on February 19, 2011, and proceedings will coincide with the opening game which will also take place in Bangladesh on the same day. That is exciting news for both cricket lovers in Bangladesh and the people of the country in general as the move will no doubt generate a lot of tourism and cast a spotlight on the country, hopefully helping to further improve its image and economy.

Haroon Lorgat also said that the number of matches to be played at the fifteen different selected venues had been discussed. It is obvious that the event should be used to bolster local tourism efforts and every endeavor must be made to ensure that it is a massive success. If you would like to combine sport with leisure, you’ll be happy to know that the World Cup will be making its way to either Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka, Narayanganj Osmani Stadium in Fatullah or the Sher-e-Bangla Cricket Stadium in Dhaka. The final decision as to which stadium will be used for the event is yet to be made.

No doubt, this means that Bandladesh will experience a lot of tourist-related development as city officials try to ensure that it is completely ready to receive this prestigious event and the many tourists that travel with it. Though it is still some time before the 2011 Cricket World Cup takes place, fans would definitely do well to book well in advance to avoid disappointment. Visitors from other countries would also do well to take advantage of their trip and explore the country between matches so that they can learn a little bit more about the rich beauty that is to be found in Bangladesh.

YOU'RE MY NUMBER ONE - Enrique Iglesias

YOU'RE MY NUMBER ONE

~Enrique Iglesias

I've kissed the moon a million times
Danced with angels in the sky
I've seen snowfall in the summertime
Felt the healing of the powers above

I've seen the world from he highest mountain
Tasted love from the purest fountain
I've seen lips that spark desire
Felt the butterflies a hundred times

I've even seen miracles
I've felt the pain disappear
But still haven't seen anything
That amazes me quite like you do

You bring me up when I'm feeling down
You touch me deep you touch me right
You do the things I've never done
You make me wicked you make me wild
'Cause baby, your my #1

I've sailed in a perfect dream
I've seen the sun make love to the sea
I've kissed the moon a million times
Danced with angels in the sky

I've even seen miracles
I've seen the tears disappear
But still haven't seen anything
That amazes me quite like you do

High-pitched music could damage ears

high-pitched music could damage ears- iti

By Nabeela Hussain

Victorian ear trumpets

A majority of youth in the country who use MP3 players, iPods and music players attached to Ear buds or In-ear head phones and listen to music at very high levels were facing the possibility of permanent ear damage, a research conducted by the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) of the Science and Technology Ministry said. ITI Senior Deputy Director, Ananda Pannila said that increased volume, listening to high volume constantly and the proximity of the high volume cause’s the loss of hearing.

He explained that an artificial ear was created for the purpose of the research that begun a few months ago.

“We tested how the ear would be affected at different volume levels and we have recommended that close to 50% of the volume should be used when listening to music and only for 3-4 hours a day,” he said.

Mr. Pannila also said that the recommended volume should not be changed when using ear phones while travelling or in public places.

“We also recommend that if they are used at a volume of 90% or more then it is advisable to use the ear phone for only 10 minutes,” he said.

Mr. Pannila explained that with the high volume that is emitted through the ear phones, damage sensitive hair cells which converted sound energy to electric signals that were read by the brain were damaged. Making of Katy Perry - Firework-

Making of Firework-

Katy Perry

Katy Perry's boobs shoot firecrackers in the new video for "Firework." There is no way that this fact was lost on the clip's creators.

Yes, of course, it's not lost on me, either, that the sparks are supposed to be interpreted as flying from her heart, or her soul, or whatever. But this, after the summer of "California Gurls," which featured the pop star's infamous breasts sporting a whipped cream-canon bra. Perry's cleavage got her in trouble with some parents watching "Sesame Street" -- a snafu to which Perry reacted to be wearing a tight, equally revealing t-shirt on "Saturday Night Live." It's like Christine O'Donnell declaring in campaign commercials that she's "not a witch" -- a rumor which she hoped to drop by further promoting it.

But you couldn't shoot fireworks, say, from the tops of their heads, or their nether regions or from their shoulders. Because then that would look just plain silly. So bosoms it is, and thus two making a trend of things exploding out from Katy Perry's breasts (three, if you count "controversy" from the "Sesame" snag).

So anyway, the ludicrousness of fireworks flying from Katy Perry's and others' chests overshadows (pun intended) the clip's larger intent and message: you just keep being you.

In my review of "Teenage Dream," "Fireworks" was one of my favorite tracks from the set, and revisiting, it holds up. I like its message, I like its delivery. Perry has gone on to dedicate it to the "It Gets Better" campaign, which encourages gay teenagers that the bullying, the inner conflicts, the search for a partner -- it gets better.

But the feel-good gets a honey-sticky makeover, sometimes cheapening the problems presented. A kid about to get robbed by thugs SHOULD NOT try and pull magic tricks on them. A cancer-stricken child likely doesn't have the energy to go dancing in the public square.

Inception and Social Network win Writers Guild awards

Inception and Social Network win Writers Guild awards

Christopher Nolan
Christopher Nolan called his award 'an incredible honour'

Sci-fi thriller Inception and Facebook movie The Social Network have won the main prizes at the Writers Guild of America (WGA) awards.

Inception, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, won best original screenplay, while The Social Network was named best adapted screenplay.

The King's Speech, which is nominated for 12 Oscars, was ineligible for the awards and did not make the shortlist.

Winners were announced at simultaneous ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles.

British-born film-maker Christopher Nolan, who wrote, produced and directed Inception, called the award an "incredible honour".

He said the prize would have been more significant if "certain other screenplays" had been nominated, without naming The King's Speech.

The Royal drama is in the running for the best original screenplay Oscar, against Nolan's Inception.

It was ruled out of contention for the WGA awards because it was not produced under contractual guidance issued by the union.

Nolan added that he had been "heartbroken" when the script for Memento had fallen outside WGA guidelines nine years ago.

Social Network writer Aaron Sorkin said: "I wrote a good screenplay, but [director] David Fincher made a great movie."

The writers of Mad Men were honoured for best television drama, with Boardwalk Empire collecting the award for outstanding new TV drama.

British screenwriter Peter Morgan, whose previous credits include The Queen and Frost/Nixon, was awarded for his work on small screen drama The Special Relationship.

The WGAs are seen as a good indicator of which films will win writing plaudits at the Oscars, because many of its members also belong to the Academy.

Tharanga Goonetilleke – Distinguished Lyric Soprano

Tharanga Goonetilleke – Distinguished Lyric Soprano

article_image

by Nanda P. Wanasundera

Meeting Tharanga was an experience for me since I was immediately charmed by her and surprised by her delightful simplicity and her evident modesty while being a world acclaimed opera singer. Hear her on the 12th at Ladies College at the Symphony Orchestra event when she will be soloist and judge for yourself her performance. Meet her and you too will be charmed by her total lack of hubris. She emerges an ingénue who takes acclaim and success well in her stride. Read the quotes below and you will see how internationally appreciated she is. "Tharanga Goonetilleke, a soprano from Sri Lanka, brought an appealingly rich tone - and, more important, a sense of innocence, conflict and, in her final scene, radiance - to her characterization of Blanche."

- Allan Kozinn. The New York Times, April 22nd, 2010

"Tharanga Goonetilleke emphasized Blanche’s naïveté and fears, her passionate searching and her final acceptance with glowing tones and phrasing, both clear and luxurious.....in winning performances filled with emotional truth." Judith Malafronte. Opera News April 21st, 2010

"Soprano Tharanga Goonetilleke as Mimi...her assured presence, creamy voice, and delicious vulnerability marks her as someone on the threshold of stardom" Harvey Steiman. The Aspen Times, July 21, 2009

"Soprano Tharanga Goonetilleke was enchanting. I still have chills from her high D in ‘dulcissime’ where each pitch of the coloratura triplets leading to this culminating high pitch was perfectly in tune. It was the most extraordinary performance of this passage I have heard live." Jeffrey Johnson. Greenwich Time Review of March 15, 2009 concert

To complement the praise of experts, Tharanga mentioned the four most important operatic roles she has sung so far, and awards and honours won.

1) Mimi in La Boheme by Puccini

2) Pamina in The Magic Flute by Mozart

3) Blanche in The Dialogues of the Carmelites by

Poulenc

4) Ginevra in Ariodante by Handel

1) Recipient of the Makiko Narumi Memorial Prize

at the Juilliard School

2) Metropolitan Opera National Council State win

ner for the states of SC and NY.

3) Distinction in Opera from Converse College

(awarded to Tharanga after 125 years of this

award not being given to anyone)

4) Winner of the Palmetto Opera concerto competi

tion in South Carolina School.

Tharanga studied at Ladies College and was into music and singing from early on as her father used to sing at home and her mother was a piano teacher. In school she was choir leader and performed in several concerts. With Christine Perera’s help she passed her ATCL – Voice - and became an Associate of the Trinity College of Music, London. But music was just one part of her life. Later, when it became her course of study and career, she felt it had always been what she wanted to do and be. Her lucky break came when she sang solo at a Christmas concert with the Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka. Professor Douglas Weeks, piano soloist, hearing her, advised her to apply to the college he was in - Converse College, South Carolina. She did as suggested but was far from sure whether this was what she wanted to study and take on as a career. Thus started a journey in music with fortune smiling on her all the way. Of course it was not only good luck; it was her ability, musicality, commitment and perseverance that guided her from success to success. At Converse she majored in music and minored in Biology from 2001 to 2005. Her parents wondered whether opera would be a worthwhile career and what if she wanted to return home. She entered a competition - the Metropolitan Opera National Council Audition and was the winner for the State of Carolina. Judges were from the Juilliard School New York, the world’s most prestigious college for the performing arts. Impressed by her, they enquired from her whether she was not considering higher studies. The consideration of money cropped up to which they said scholarships were available. She was selected from hundreds after severe judging, first on a CD submitted by her and then actually performing to the examiners and being interviewed. Here again luck weighted the scales in her favour.

Not only was she accepted by Juilliard but was given free tuition. Her living expenses were funded by the President’s Fund (Sri Lanka). She told me this with a special purpose in mind; to advise others aspiring to study abroad not to give up easily due to lack of money or other constraints. After her Masters degree she was considering returning home when her voice teacher suggested she apply for the Artist Diploma at Juilliard Opera Center, which is most prestigious programme at the Juilliard. She applied and was selected to this program where tuition was free and a stipend paid.

During her career so far, she has travelled to Paris, Rome, Florence, London, Scotland, Korea to perform in operas/concerts. She has studied the languages she sings in – Italian, French, German, Russian – because as she said, you have to sound a native of a country whose opera you are performing. For instance, she spent six weeks in the Michael Angelo Institute in Florence steeped in learning Italian. "Words have a taste," she said, which to me was a totally evocative and perceptive statement from this young woman.

The talent for singing and performing runs in the family. Tharanga’s younger sister followed her to Converse College and then moved to the Southern Illinois University for her Masters in opera and musical theatre.

Thereafter Tharanga was included in the roster of New York City Opera where she made her debut last November, conducted by Maestro George Manahan.

After her short spell in Sri Lanka she will go to Virginia to sing under the baton of the famous conductor – Lorin Maazel. "I would rather be in Sri Lanka", Tharanga said, considering her parents who miss their two daughters very much. "But opportunities in the States are really great. I can give back what I have benefited by." We wish her well, this young woman who is a pride to Sri Lanka and an admirable ambassador of our country wherever she performs, especially in New York which is where she resides.

Susan Boyle Misses Her Cat | Susan Boyle

Susan Magdalane Boyle (born April 1, 1961) is a Scottish Grammy Award-nominated singer who came to international public attention when she appeared as a contestant on reality TV program Britain’s Got Talent in April 2009, singing “I Dreamed a Dream” from Les Miserables. Boyle was born in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland, to Patrick Boyle, a miner, World War II veteran and singer at the Bishop’s Blaize, and Bridget, a shorthand typist, who were both immigrants from County Donegal, Ireland.

She was the youngest of four brothers and six sisters. Born when her mother was 47, Boyle was briefly deprived of oxygen during the difficult birth and was later diagnosed as having learning difficulties. Boyle says she was bullied as a child and was nicknamed “Susie Simple” at school.

Harnessing her talent at an early age, Boyle first took singing lessons from voice coach Fred O’Neil. She attended Edinburgh Acting School and took part in the Edinburgh Fringe. Prior to Britain’s Got Talent, her main experience had come from singing in her local Catholic church, Our Lady of Lourdes; in local choirs; and in karaoke performances at pubs in and around her village.

In August 2008, Boyle applied for an audition for the third series of Britain’s Got Talent and was accepted after a preliminary audition in Glasgow. Global interest in Boyle was triggered by the contrast between her powerful voice and her plain appearance on stage.

The juxtaposition of the audience’s first impression of her, with the standing ovation she received during and after her performance, led to an international media and Internet response. Within nine days of the audition, videos of Boyle-from the show, various interviews and her 1999 rendition of “Cry Me a River” - had been watched over 100 million times. Her audition video has been viewed on the internet several hundred million times.

Despite the sustained media interest she later finished in second place in the final of the show behind dance troupe Diversity. Boyle’s first album, I Dreamed a Dream, was released in November 2009 and became Amazon’s best-selling album in pre-sales.

According to Billboard, “The arrival of “I Dreamed a Dream” marks the best opening week for a female artiste’s debut album since SoundScan began tracking sales in 1991.” In only six weeks of sales, it became the biggest selling album in the world for 2009, selling nine million copies.

In September 2010, Boyle was officially recognised by Guinness World Records as having had the fastest selling debut album by a female artiste in the UK, the most successful first week sales of a debut album in the UK, and was also awarded the record for being the oldest person to reach number one with a debut album in the UK.

On July 9, 2010, Boyle said that her second album would be a Christmas album entitled ‘The Gift’. As part of the lead up to the album, she will be holding a competition ‘Susan’s Search’, the winner of which would get to sing a duet with her on her new CD.

The album was released on November 8, 2010. It has been announced that Boyle will appear in a musical about her life. She will appear as herself, rather than “having to sit watching people up there”, who are actors.

Facebook will NOT end on March 15th. Hoax news story spreads like wildfire

Filed Under: Social networks, Spam, Video

Facebook and Mark ZuckerbergHeard a story that Facebook is going to end on March 15th? You should take it with a pinch of salt.

A story is spreading like wildfire across Facebook this weekend, claiming that the world's most popular social network is closing on March 15th.

The reason? CEO Mark Zuckerberg claims that "managing [Facebook] has ruined my life. I need to put an end to all the madness."

(Enjoy this video? You can check out more on the SophosLabs YouTube channel and subscribe if you like)

There's only one problem with the story. It's not true. Facebook is not going to end on March 15th, and Mark Zuckerberg never said any such thing.

But that's not stopping many many Facebook users spreading the message.

Facebook will end on March 15th!

Many of the messages include a link to an apparent news story, where users can read more about the surprising announcement of Facebook's death:

Facebook will end on March 15th! Link to Weekly World News

If you click on the link, here's where you are taken. A news story by a publication that also tells us that Mike Tyson is a pigeon fancier, Michelle Obama is pregnant and alien spaceships are to attack earth in 2011:

Facebook will end on March 15th! Weekly World News story

However, the story published by the Weekly World News is, like most of their stories, full of fabricated quotes and hyperbole. For instance, the Weekly World News story contains a made-up quote from a Facebook representative, telling users that they may lose all their photographs:

"After March 15th the whole website shuts down," said Avrat Humarthi, Vice President of Technical Affairs at Facebook. "So if you ever want to see your pictures again, I recommend you take them off the internet. You won’t be able to get them back once Facebook goes out of business."

I certainly wouldn't disagree that users would be wise to have their own backup of their photographs, rather than rely on Facebook - but it's nothing more than a scare to suggest to people that they have to do it before March 15th because Facebook is going to close down.

Most people would probably never believe such a load of old nonsense as the claim that Mark Zuckerberg is going to shut down Facebook, but it only takes a small proportion of people to think it might be possible to turn a joke of a news story into an internet hoax.

And although a hoax is nothing like as bad as a piece of malware worming its way between users and stealing information, it's still a nuisance, clogging up communications, increasing the overall level of spam and perhaps leading people to make decisions for the wrong reasons.

There's an important lesson here - don't believe everything you read on the internet, and think twice before you pass a story on to your friends.

Keep your wits about you and stay informed about the latest scams, hoaxes and malware attacks spreading fast across Facebook. One of the best ways to do that is to join the Sophos Facebook page, where more than 50,000 people regularly share information on threats and discuss the latest security news.
