Spice Girls reunite for world tour

Spice Girls reunite for world tour
LONDON, England (Reuters) --

The Spice Girls, who burst on to the music scene with "girl power" and attitude in the 1990s, have reunited for a world tour, their Web site said on Thursday.

"Hey everybody!! We're back!! Can you believe it!!" Ginger, Sporty, Posh, Scary and Baby Spice announced on their Web siteexternal link .

The Web site said the group had come together for a world tour and provided a link for fans to buy tickets in 11 cities across the world starting on December 7 in Los Angeles.

The five-member band is the latest in a long line of pop acts to bury past differences and reform, hoping for success where many others have failed.

The Spice Girls boasted album sales of 55 million during their brief career, and hits including "Wannabe" and "Say You'll Be There" topped charts across the globe.

But the success was shortlived, with Geri "Ginger" Halliwell leaving in 1998, four years after The Spice Girls was created, and the remaining band members going their separate ways after releasing the album "Forever" in 2000.

All now in their 30s, the singers embarked on solo careers with varying degrees of success, and rumors that they may one day reform have circulated for years.

Victoria "Posh" Beckham has maintained the highest profile since the band split, helped by her superstar soccer-playing husband David and regular appearances at fashion shows and on tabloid front pages.

The couple are moving to the United States where David has signed to play for LA Galaxy, and Victoria aims to carve out a career of her own in fashion and television.

Meanwhile, Melanie "Scary" Brown largely disappeared from the public eye until a high-profile paternity case involving Hollywood star Eddie Murphy.

Earlier this month a DNA test confirmed Murphy as the father of Brown's newborn baby girl after he declined to publicly acknowledge paternity.

I think this news is very much excited one for every music lovers even in Sri Lanka. If anyone know about Re-Unit of Boyzone, Please inform us .

Michael Jackson Finally Emulates Elvis, Howard Hughes

Jacko Finally Emulates Elvis, Howard Hughes

Michael Jackson may at last be living out his greatest fantasy: life as Elvis Presley.

According to my sources — who are very much on top of the current Jackson situation in Las Vegas — Michael has retreated largely to his bed rather than do any work.

But Michael will be getting out of bed soon, because on June 30, his one-year lease on a Las Vegas mansion runs out. And then Jackson is out, too, along with his three kids, nanny and security team.

The house Jackson’s been renting for millions of dollars that he doesn’t really have belongs to a weird and scary guy, too. Luke Brugnara is a self-made San Francisco commercial realtor with designs on being a Las Vegas player.

Brugnara, unlike many of Jackson’s previous and patrons and landlords, is no pussycat. He’s wildly outspoken, with no constraint when it comes to putting things the way he sees them. Apparently he’s looking forward to moving into the 11-bathroom, 20-room manse he leased to Michael so he can make his move in Sin City.

(Story continues below)
Where that leaves Jackson is unclear. Friends and family are “very worried” that he’s drugged most of the time on prescription painkillers. He is more than ever isolated from nearly everyone by his children’s nanny, Grace Rwaramba, and his Washington, D.C.-based publicist Raymone Bain.

What Jackson isn’t doing: making an album of any kind, working on music or touring or getting himself ready for the May 2008 turnover of the Beatles catalog to Sony Music.

He is, however, possibly aware of the $5 million settlement reached recently with entrepreneur Darien Dash minutes before the latter’s lawsuit was set to begin court proceedings last week.

Sources tell me that Jackson spends a great deal of time in bed and is not focused on any kind of reality. That’s not a total surprise, but with the end of the Vegas lease, he may have to consider returning to Neverland.

All of the acrimony in the Jackson story is trained on Rwaramba, whom I’ve told you about before. She’s been married — and may not be divorced — and has been with Jackson since she started as an office assistant more than a decade ago.

And here’s something new about Jacko’s nanny: While Michael’s residential issues keep him at large, Rwaramba is living in a luxury condo at Las Vegas’ new Turnberry Towers. A concierge at the Towers confirmed last night that she was there.

By the looks of the floor plan, Rwaramba has installed herself in a 900-plus square foot one-bedroom with excellent views of the city. It’s unclear whether she bought it or is subletting, but the Towers are pricey. According to its Web site, apartments run between $500,000 and more than $1 million. Not bad for a nanny!

Where Jackson goes from here is the big question. Even though Bain put out a decoy press release last week that he would move to Europe and tour, there are no plans for that. With Rwaramba set up at Turnberry, it’s likely he’ll find another overpriced mansion on which he can burn off his remaining money.

Larry King Calls Ringo 'George'

Ah, what a night for Larry King. He called Ringo Starr “George” during his Beatles show last night, and read most of his interview off of cue cards he held closer to his face than Mr. Magoo used to read traffic signs.

Still, there’s not much you can do to the Beatles. Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison and Yoko Ono acquitted themselves well. Paul and Ringo still share a lovely camaraderie, and Larry is so self-absorbed he didn’t even get it when they were having fun with him.

I loved it when Larry announced Paris Hilton’s appearance, and McCartney shook his head to suggest that he’d never heard of her.

McCartney also played a little bit of mandolin and the opening of his single, “Dance Tonight.” Young wannabe rockers could take a lesson from this: It was simple and pure, and rendered perfectly. Nice.

But it might have been nice if Larry had mentioned that the Beatles just observed two 40th anniversaries: the release of “Sgt. Pepper” (June 2 in America) and “All You Need Is Love” (June 25th).

Plus, McCartney turned 65 last Monday. Next week, Beatlefest comes to Las Vegas, and on July 6, a 50th anniversary weekend celebration of John Lennon meeting McCartney takes place in Liverpool with a festival (see www.birthofthebeatles.com).

Larry might also have asked McCartney what he thought about Michael Jackson, and the turnover next year of Paul’s songs to Sony.

Or how Paul feels about Yoko — who was sitting there — getting a larger portion of royalties because of John’s death. Or he could ask asked Yoko about Julian Lennon. Instead, one of King’s red suspenders fell off in the first segment, like a bra strap on a tipsy ingĂ©nue. Too bad Paris wasn’t the guest last night.

By the way, if you’re wondering about the Beatles’ influence even now, Danny Bennett suggested to me that the abrupt ending of the last episode of "The Sopranos" and the cut to black was inspired by the Beatles’ “She’s So Heavy” from “Abbey Road.” Could be!

Rosie O'Donnell: Picture Tells No Story

On Tuesday, a picture of Vivi, Rosie O’Donnell’s daughter with partner Kelli, which Rosie posted on her blog, caused a commotion. Little Vivi was pictured with toy artillery slung around her neck, as if she were about to head off into the killing fields.

Was Rosie making an anti-war statement? Was it something about children? Was it ironic? Taunting?

Or none of the above. Here’s the story. Rosie, according to sources, was going through some pictures of the kids and thought that was a particularly good one.

“It meant nothing,” says a friend. “The kids play everything from war to dress up. It didn’t occur to anyone that it would be perceived in any particular way.”

By the end of the day, Rosie had posted a slide show of Vivi in other get-ups (like dresses, etc.) with Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” playing in the background.

Lighten up, folks! It’s only June. Let’s keep the tension down till summer really kicks in.

New British PM Gordon Brown Books With Weinsteins

Incoming British Prime Minister Gordon Brown has found a U.S. publisher for his bestselling U.K. tome, "Courage."

Weinstein Company Books, a division of the movie company that currently has "Sicko" and "1408" in theaters, has won the rights to the book. They plan to publish in spring 2008. "Courage" was just released in Britain, where it's an instant hit.

Brown, the son of a minister, profiles eight of his heroes, a la John Kennedy's "Profiles in Courage."

His portraits include Edith Cavell, who nursed the wounded of World War I in Belgium and helped Allied soldiers escape back to England; Protestant pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who in 1940 returned to Nazi Germany from New York to lead the Christian opposition against the Nazi regime; businessman Raoul Wallenberg, who left neutral Sweden in 1944

to go to Budapest to try save the lives of Hungarian Jews; Cicely Saunders, who changed the way we care for the dying by founding and leading the Hospice Movement; and Aung San Suu Kyi, who for 20 years — much of that time under house arrest in Rangoon — has led her country's democratic opposition to military dictatorship and continues to do so today.

All of these subjects sound like good movie projects, too. Maybe Brown will sign on with the Weinsteins as a producer, as well, in his spare time!

Chris Benoit - Wrestler strangled wife, smothered son

Police: Wrestler strangled wife, smothered son

Shocking details continue to come out about the apparent double murder-suicide of professional wrestling star Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy, and 7-year-old son Daniel.

Lt. Tommy Pope of the Fayette County, Ga. sheriff's office, said in news conference earlier Tuesday that authorities believe Benoit asphyxiated his wife on Friday evening at their home in suburban Atlanta, then similarly killed his son sometime Saturday before hanging himself Saturday night. Authorities previously told the Associated Press that Benoit strangled his wife Saturday and smothered his son Sunday, before killing himself Monday.

LocalLinks
Pope said anabolic steroids were found in Benoit's home, although authorities believe he had a valid prescription. They also said that bibles were found beside the bodies of both Benoit's wife and son.

Nancy Benoit was found in an upstairs family room with her wrists and feet bound, wrapped in a towel and with blood below her head, said Scott Ballard, district attorney for the Griffin Judicial Circuit, which includes Fayette County. Daniel Benoit was found in his upstairs bedroom. Benoit hanged himself using the cord from a weightlifting machine in a basement weight room, Ballard said. No suicide note was found.

The findings of a toxicology report are not expected for several weeks.

Benoit, 40, was discovered dead in his home by Fayetville police Monday after he failed to show up at two scheduled matches in Texas over the weekend, including at World Wrestling Entertainment's Vengeance pay-per-view event in Houston Sunday night. He cited a family emergency as the reason for skipping the shows.

After friends in WWE received several "curious text messages" from Benoit, and WWE officials were unable to reach him, the sheriff's department in Peachtree City, Ga. went to Benoit's home to check on his family about 2:30 p.m.

After maneuvering through two German shepherds that guarded the home, police found Benoit, his wife and child dead in three separate rooms in the home, according to WAGA-TV. The Wrestling Observer newsletter reported that Fayette County police are operating under the theory that Benoit killed his wife on Saturday, son Daniel on Sunday, and then killed himself Monday at his home – a mansion surrounded by stone walls with a gravel road leading to double iron gates.

Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the details of the incident may "prove a little bizarre" when they come out.

WWE scrapped its scheduled live, sold-out Monday Night RAW program in Corpus Christy Monday night and sent fans home. In the show's place, WWE chairman Vince McMahon and the WWE announcing team introduced a three-hour career retrospective that included several highlights from Benoit's 22-year career, as well as emotional testimonials from fellow pro wrestlers.

McMahon reportedly broke the news around 4:30 p.m. Monday to a locker room overcome with shock and grief. As news of authorities' suspicion that Benoit killed his wife and son came out, WWE scaled back their tribute to the former world champion on the WWE Web site. The company is scheduled to hold its regular television tapings Tuesday night.

Benoit, a native of Edmonton, Canada, trained in Calgary and made his pro debut in 1985. He plied his trade in Japan for years before become a fixture on the American wrestling circuit in the mid-1990s. He joined WWE in 1999 and won the company's world heavyweight championship at Madison Square Garden at WrestleMania XX in 2004. He was widely expected to win the Extreme Championship Wrestling world title at Sunday's pay-per-view event.

Benoit became romantically involved with the then Nancy Sullivan, who worked as a pro wresting valet under the name "Woman," in the mid-1990s while she was married to another wrestler, Kevin Sullivan. The Pro Wrestling Torch newsletter said the marriage was known among wrestling circles to be volatile.

Benoit had two children from another relationship that were not in the home during the deaths.

Staff Writer Alex Marvez will be discussing the Benoit situation on Fox news at 7 p.m. Tuesday and at 8:05 a.m. on WQAM (560-AM) and 8:20 a.m. on WIOD (610-AM) on Wednesday.

Tom Cruise Finally Meets His Match

On Monday, the German Defense Ministry stepped up to the plate and tried to stop Tom Cruise from playing World War II hero Col. Claus von Stauffenberg.

The ministry said it would prohibit Cruise from filming his Nazi movie, “Valkyrie,” at historic government sites. Cruise, they said, represents Scientology, a group that the German authorities do not recognize as a religion. They consider it a cult.

Last week, Cruise was in Berlin meeting with local Scientology associates as he prepared to film “Valkyrie” with director Bryan Singer. People magazine said he was seeing “business associates,” but German publications reported the real story.

German Defense Ministry spokesman Harald Kammerbauer told Reuters that the filmmakers "will not be allowed to film at German military sites if Count Stauffenberg is played by Tom Cruise, who has publicly professed to being a member of the Scientology cult.”

Paris Hilton released from jail - by, Priyantha De Silva

Paris Hilton released from jail

Early this morning, Paris Hilton was released from jail after serving a 23-day sentence for violating her probation on a prior conviction for reckless driving. Here's a photo taken soon after her release:

Paris Hilton released from jail

We see photos of celebrities smiling in public all the time, at movie openings, at awards shows, on stage, on TV, on red carpets...anywhere there's a camera waiting to capture a public image. Hilton in particular is known for smiling in public, chin down and looking up to the right. But the above photo is the first time she's ever looked genuinely happy, an authentic smile. Never have all those smiling celebrity photos -- and the purposes behind them -- looked so phony.

Choral music on CD

‘Pahan Ridma’: Choral music on CD

From early days, Christians in Sri Lanka had developed a close affinity to a distinct tradition of religious choral music in their worship. When Latin was the official language of Liturgy, there were some leading musicians and liturgists who put into vernacular some of the touching tunes used in liturgical services in Europe. Those tunes are still haunting in the ears of the elders in the Catholic community. Some of them are still sung in the churches today whereas others seems have disappeared completely.

Fr. Edmund Tillekeratne has painstakingly done a musical arrangement with those melodies to bring mind to tranquility with a religious colouring. Has he been successful in doing that? Well, I must say the type of musical arrangements done by him, appeals to a certain category only, as any tradition of musical thought would do. Anyhow he has preserved the devotional flavour in the musical arrangement.

Fr. Edmund Tillekeratne

The CD 'Pahan Ridma' includes sixteen tunes. Most of those tunes are found in the very early hymnal called 'Gee Kalamba' printed at Maggona press by Franciscan Brothers. The collection represents several stages in the history of the Sinhala Catholic hymn. There are some hymns in this CD, whose melodies are of Western origin. 'Ma Premavu' 'Divya Hardayeni', 'Divya’, Jesu Me Tama',' Samadanayehi Rajaniya' , 'Divya Sri Pupeni', 'Santana Meniyane', 'Supul Sara', 'Paralkce Mannaveni' and 'Vewa Mama Mathata'.

Also the CD comprises of some well-known compositions of Fr. Mercelline Jayakody 'Nelum Pipila', 'Penibara Vanamal', 'Jesu Rajaneni' and 'Sapiri Sema'. There are some hymns whose composers are not indicated such as 'Padua Nagaraye'. 'Minisiyave' is one of the hymn tunes composed by Fr. Tillekeratne himself in recent time and another composition by M. G. Sugathadasa- 'Mal Kekulak See' and the lyricist and the composer are not known for the song 'Ma Pawin Midi'.
Fr. Tillekeratne has made use of several instruments to bring out the soothing effect. The CD as a whole is a meditative journey. Listening this brings mind to tranquility and it could be used to heal traumatic mind, to bring out the mind from a traumatic experience. This instrumental CD has a healing effect and tranquilizing effect to a greater extent, not undermining the musical flavour it possess.

Sugathadasa

In Sri Lanka, listening to instrumental or vocal music, without words has not yet taken its roots. In the west, there are still many more classical music lovers who listen to instrumental music. In the east, especially in India, ragas are played for hours and there are those who love to listen. Yet, Fr. Tillekeratne has courageously endeavoured to bring an instrumental CD with Western and Eastern flavor.

Fr. Tillekeratne seems to have used the modem technology in the production. This is clear by the use of different tones of violins and other instruments used throughout the CD.

Gone is the glory!, BMICH

Gone is the glory!

I was one of the many who saw the foundations being laid to the BMICH and remember quite fondly having worked one day mixing cement along with my colleagues at the government department where I worked then. It was a great pride to see Sri Lanka getting a conference hall of international class.
BMICH

I have attended several events at the BMICH and was aghast at the rundown condition of this once beautiful hall. The BMICH is in a distressing condition.

There is nothing international about it: the carpets are worn out and torn, the main ‘red’ carpet is wretched and disfigured, the staircase carpets are so dirty that they are black, the committee rooms are not maintained and the public address systems no longer function properly.

Outside loudspeaker monstrosities have to be plunked on the stage because of this. Of the two main gates, only one functions: all traffic in and out has to pass through one narrow lane and one entrance making it a safety nightmare.

Above all, what passes for air-conditioning is a shame. The faint cooling at the beginning of an event gives way as the hall gets filled. Within a short while the hall and the committee rooms become a furnace with temperatures rising to 270C-320C. The biggest indictment of the system was there for the whole country to see when the last Sarasaviya film awards were broadcast: the then Chairman of People’s Bank who spoke on that occasion could be seen in close up dripping with sweat. What was not shown was that almost everyone in the auditorium was in a similar predicament. The outside was cooler than the inside!

When the air-conditioning is in such a parlous state, there is a massive investment made on a ‘hotch potch’ of additional buildings and on a 1000 KW standby generator.

It is our obligation to cherish and maintain that gift without tarnishing the good name of the great country which gave us that gift, China. The current state of the BMICH not only dishonours that gift given by the generous people but also the name of the man after whom it is named. Are we in such a pathetic state that we cannot sustain what is even given to us?
