Chocolate Helps Heart Stay Healthy

Chocolate Helps Heart Stay Healthy

A small square of dark chocolate daily protects the heart from inflammation and subsequent heart disease, a new study of Italians suggests. Milk chocolate might not do the job.

However, this guilty pleasure has a limit.

Specifically, only 6.7 grams of chocolate per day (or 0.23 ounces) represents the ideal amount, according to results from the Moli-sani Project, one of the largest health studies ever conducted in Europe. For comparison, a standard-sized Hershey's kiss is about 4.5 grams (though they are not made of dark chocolate) and one Hershey's dark chocolate bar is about 41 grams (so a recommendation might be one of those weekly).

Chronic inflammation of tissues in the circulatory system is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, such as myocardial infarction or stroke. So doctors strive to keep patients' inflammation under control. One marker for inflammation in the blood is called C-reactive protein.

The researchers found a relationship between dark chocolate intake and levels of this protein in the blood of 4,849 subjects in good health and free of risk factors (such as high cholesterol or blood pressure, and other parameters). The findings are detailed in the latest issue of the Journal of Nutrition.

"We started from the hypothesis that high amounts of antioxidants contained in the cocoa seeds, in particular flavonoids and other kinds of polyphenols, might have beneficial effects on the inflammatory state," said Romina di Giuseppe, lead author of the study. "Our results have been absolutely encouraging: People having moderate amounts of dark chocolate regularly have significantly lower levels of C-reactive protein in their blood. In other words, their inflammatory state is considerably reduced."
The inflammation reduction that the researchers observed controlled for other confounding variables such as wine or produce intake.

Previous studies have found that chocolate might be good for you, though doctors usually warn that it is more important to focus on one's overall diet when it comes to health. One health study found that blood platelets among chocolate-lovers were less likely to clot together in dangerous clumps.

Other studies have found a host of diet and exercise changes that can help a person beat the odds of death. Clearly, no single change is a guarantee of long life.

With chocolate, moderation is key, the new study found.

"The best effect is obtained by consuming an average amount of 6.7 grams of chocolate per day, corresponding to a small square of chocolate twice or three times a week. Beyond these amounts the beneficial effect tends to disappear," di Giuseppe said.

The milk in milk chocolate interferes with polyphenols, so the team kept that out of the study.

"We consider this outcome as the beginning of a large series of data which will give us an innovative view on how [to achieve] prevention in everyday life, both against cardiovascular disease and tumors," said Licia Iacoviello, head of the Laboratory of Genetic and Environmental Epidemiology at the Catholic University of Campobasso and responsible for the Moli-sani Project.

The Moli-sani Project is funded by the Pfizer Foundation.

Britney sweeps at otherwise tame VMAs

Britney sweeps at otherwise tame VMAs

It took a year, but Britney Spears got the comeback she was seeking from the MTV Video Music Awards - and she didn't even have to sing or dance.

Spears nabbed three VMAs, including video of the year, erasing last year's career-low performance. Her first Moonman trophies came during a 25th anniversary show that otherwise lacked a defining moment, with most of the zaniness coming from host Russell Brand.

"Wow, thank you, I'm in shock right now. I was not expecting this," Spears, looking spectacular in a shimmering silver dress, said as she accepted her third trophy of the evening for "Piece of Me."Spears kept all three of her acceptance speeches short."This is such an honour to have this award right now," she said. "I want to thank my fans, this is dedicated to you."There was no such honour for Spears last year, when the declining diva - by then known more for her tabloid exploits and erratic behaviour - kicked off the Las Vegas telecast. Looking haggard and dazed, Spears bumbled her way through a performance of "Gimme More" that gave new meaning to the phrase "Sin City."

Though Spears didn't perform this time, she still opened the show, giving a blink-and-you-missed-it introduction of Rihanna. Still, just being there was enough for a standing ovation from the star-studded crowd long before she opened her mouth to get things rolling.Spears did provide a few laughs during a pre-taped comedic segment with "Superbad" actor Jonah Hill that preceded the live telecast. There were a few more laughs during comedian Brand's opening monologue, but the celeb audience seemed more nervous than amused, as the frenetic Brit took aim at Madonna, the virginity of teen sensations the Jonas Brothers and President Bush, whom he called "a retarded cowboy fellow."

He clearly got under the skin of one celebrity, however, with his jokes about promise rings, which the Jonas Brothers wear to signify their virginity. Another famous promise-ring wearer, Jordin Sparks, said before giving out one award:

"I just wanna say, it's not bad to wear a promise ring because not every guy and a girl wants to be a slut, OK?" she quipped.

Afterward, a somewhat contrite Brand apologized to a stone-faced Jonas Brothers, saying, "I didn't mean to take it lightly" before adding, "a little sex once and a while never hurt anybody."

Though the VMAs have been defined by zany, wild moments in the past - the Michael and Lisa Marie kiss, the Britney-Madonna kiss, Prince's butt-out jeans just to name a few - there were more head-scratching moments than outrageous ones at the sprawling Paramount Studios lot.The prim and proper Leona Lewis gave a graceful opening performance for a song by ... Lil Wayne, who appeared on stage barechested, displaying his tattooed torso as his pants hung below his buttocks (Ralph Lauren's underwear line got a nice plug, however). He performed hits "A Milli" and a song with T-Pain.

The Jonas Brothers performed a version of their song "Lovebug" that was so genteel one might have thought they were doing a tribute to the Osmonds. But the trio then segued to a rocked-out version of the song in the final moments, as a throng of screaming fans surrounded them on one of the movie's many sets.

Pink gave perhaps the show's most rousing performance, a pyrotechnic-fueled performance of her new song, "So What."T.I.'s performance was also noteworthy, since the last time he was due to perform at an awards show, he was arrested instead.

At last year's BET Hip-Hop Awards, he was accused of trying to buy machine guns and silencers (he was sentenced earlier this year to serve about a year in prison after completing at least 1,000 hours of community service).

He performed a new song with Rihanna, who also appeared on last year's show. But the dazzling singer from Barbados is hardly in need of any second chances, coming into the VMAs as one of music's hottest acts thanks to her two No. 1 hits of the summer, "Take a Bow" and "Disturbia."Closing the night was Kanye West who, like Spears, was hoping for a second chance after a disappointing VMA experience last year.

In Las Vegas, he had a Kanye-sized hissy fit backstage and vowed never to appear at the VMAs again after he didn't get a Moonman trophy despite several nominations.

This time, he had a stage all to himself, but he still may have reason to be miffed: he won no trophies during the ceremony, and, appearing after Spears accepted her third and final trophy of the evening, may have been more of an afterthought.

'Mad Men,' '30 Rock' take top Emmy awards

'Mad Men,' '30 Rock' take top Emmy awards

By LYNN ELBER, AP Television

LOS ANGELES - The sleek '60s drama "Mad Men" made Emmy history Sunday as the first basic-cable show to win a top series award, while the sitcom "30 Rock" and its stars Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin also emerged as big winners.

"We're all so very grateful to have jobs in this turkey-burger economy," Fey said after accepting the best comedy series trophy for her satire about a late-night TV show.

"This is the greatest job I've ever had in my life," Baldwin said of his role an a network executive.

He paid tribute to Fey, the NBC show's star and creator, as "the Elaine May of her generation."

"I thank my parents for somehow raising me to have confidence that is disproportionate with my looks and abilities. Well done. That is what all parents should do," said Fey, who also won for best actress and writing in a comedy series.

Emmy voters rewarded quality, not ratings: Many of the winners draw relatively small audiences. AMC's "Mad Men," which looks at America through the prism of Madison Avenue, is lucky to get 2 million viewers.

Glenn Close of FX's "Damages" and Bryan Cranston of AMC's "Breaking Bad" captured drama acting trophies.

Close, honored for her portrayal of a ruthless attorney, complimented her fellow nominees, including Holly Hunter and Sally Field.

"We're proving that complicated, powerful, mature women are sexy in high entertainment and can carry a show," she said. "I call us the sisterhood of the TV drama divas."

Cranston won the trophy for his role of a desperate man who turns to making drugs.

Dianne Wiest of "In Treatment" and Zeljko Ivanek of "Damages" won supporting acting honors for the drama series. Jean Smart of ABC's "Samantha Who?" was honored as best supporting actress in a comedy series, with Jeremy Piven her actor counterpart for "Entourage."

Piven took aim at the five reality hosts who helped open the ceremony in what could charitably called a rambling way, saying, "What if I just kept talking for 12 minutes — what would happen? That was the opening."

The crowd at the 60th annual Primetime Emmy Awards laughed heartily, not a good sign for the hosts, who included Ryan Seacreast of "American Idol."

Don Rickles was honored for best individual performance in a variety or music program for "Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project."

"It's a mistake," Rickles said. "I've been in the business 55 years and the biggest award I got was an ashtray from the Friar's in New York."

Best reality-competition program went to "The Amazing Race," the show's sixth award. It and "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart" are now tied for most consecutive awards in a best-series category.

Jeff Probst of "Survivor," one of the ceremony's masters of ceremonies, claimed the first award for best reality series host. "We feel honored to be part of this family. Thank you for letting reality in," he said.

As the evening progressed, politics went from having a cameo to a co-starring role.

"I really look forward to the next administration, whoever it is," Jon Stewart said as he accepted the best variety, music or comedy series award for "The Daily Show." "I have nothing to follow that. I just really look forward to the next administration."

Later, Stewart and Stephen Colbert, whose "The Colbert Report" won a writing trophy, teamed to present an award — and exchange banter in which they used a package of prunes as a metaphor for the upcoming presidential election.

"America needs prunes. It may not be a young, sexy plum. Granted, it's shriveled and at times hard to swallow. But this dried-up old prune has the experience we need," Colbert said.

Tommy Smothers received a commemorative writing achievement for his work on the cutting-edge and controversial "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" from the late '60s — and turned serious.

"It's hard for me to stay silent when I keep hearing that peace is only attainable through war. And there's nothing more scary than watching ignorance in action," he said, dedicating his award to "all people who feel compelled to speak out, and are not afraid to speak to power, and won't shut up and refuse to be silenced."

Martin Sheen, who played a president on "The West Wing," lauded television for giving America a front-row seat to real presidential campaigns. Then he urged viewers to vote for "the candidate of your choice, at least once."

The award for best TV movie went to "Recount," about the contested 2000 Bush-Gore contest.

HBO's "John Adams," about the founding father, was named best miniseries and won other awards including acting trophies for Paul Giamatti, Laura Linney and Tom Wilkinson.

The historical drama set a record for most awards, 13, including five trophies Sunday and eight previously announced. The record of 11 was held by HBO's "Angels in America," the TV academy said.

HBO was the most-honored network, with 26 awards earned Sunday and at the creative arts ceremony held earlier this month. ABC was second with 12 awards, followed by CBS, NBC and PBS with 10 each; AMC with eight, Showtime with five and Fox with four.

Throughout the evening, the ceremony kept its landmark 60th birthday in the spotlight with salutes to television's past.

Pop star Josh Groban offered a marathon medley of TV theme songs, ranging from "The Simpsons" to "Mister Rogers' Neighborhood" to "South Park" to "Gilligan's Island." At one point, Ed McMahon kicked in a "Heeeere's Johnny!" to salute Johnny Carson's "Tonight" show.

A tribute to memorable TV dialogue of the past was delivered by the stars of today in an opening clip package.

"One of these days, Alice, pow, right in the kisser!" Helen Mirren said, quoting Jackie Gleason's line from "The Honeymooners."

As the show opened at the Nokia Theatre, Howie Mandel and his fellow hosts riffed about a lack of material for the ceremony.

They then turned to slapstick: "Boston Legal" star William Shatner came on stage to help Tom Bergeron rip off co-host Heidi Klum's modest suit to reveal hot pants and more skin.

U.S. support to preserve Lankan film heritage

U.S. support to preserve Lankan film heritage

The United States Government is to support the cultural preservation of documentary film heritage of Sri Lanka through the U.S. Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation.

Over 1000 of Sri Lanka's finest historical and artistic documentary films, in the care of the Government Film Unit (GFU), will be catalogued or preserved under the Ambassador's Fund for Cultural Preservation. One-hundred of them will be digitized and documented to enable future generations of Sri Lankans to view and enjoy.

Ambassador Robert Blake greets veteran filmmaker and script writer Tissa Abeysekera at the launching of the project.

The US$20,000 project is targeted to be completed in one year. "During the time I worked with the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, I often had to depend on valuable archival footage available at the Government Film Unit (GFU), for the making of news and current affairs productions. Though this material is a unique visual record of this country's history, perhaps unparalleled in South Asia, about 60% of this material has deteriorated or perished due to neglect," said Sharadha de Saram, the Project Director.

"I am very pleased that GFU has received financial assistance from the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation to document and digitize some of the most valuable archival footage available in Sri Lanka.

With this project these precious footage would be available for Sri Lankan documentary film makers and researchers and to all those interested in the cultural heritage of our country.

"By taking a leading role in efforts to preserve cultural heritage, we show our respect for other cultures and peoples," said Ambassador Blake. "I chose this project because documentary film is not only a cultural heirloom but a powerful tool in educating and raising social consciousness. Film break down divides to reach all levels of society, from the highly-educated to the illiterate, from those speaking English, to those speaking Sinhalese or Tamil."

Consultant Film Historian, Tissa Abeysekera, will contribute his professional knowledge and experience in film to the project, with a focus on the historical, social and cultural value inherent in the material.

In a ceremony at the Ministry of Mass Media and Information on Wednesday, September 17, Minister of Mass Media, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa and Information and U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka Robert Blake exchanged grant documents to launch the program.

The U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) was established in 2001 to help developing countries preserve their cultural heritage. The AFCP emphasizes the preservation of the world's cultural patrimony as an integral component of U.S. foreign relations. The project was nominated by Ambassador Robert Blake, and was one of only 68 selected for funding in a worldwide competition of over 184 nominated projects.

‘Aba’ – first Sri Lankan epic film?

*********************************
‘Aba’ – first Sri Lankan epic film?

An epic film is "a genre of film which places emphasis on human drama on a grand scale. It is more ambitious in scope than other genres such as period pieces and adventure films." Epic films entail huge production costs, have sweeping musical scores by acknowledged music composers and "an ensemble cast of bankable stars placing the film among the most expensive productions." The term epic to categorize such films is derived from the very large body of heroic poetry which is termed epic poetry where the main aspects of epic conventions are preserved: the centrality of a hero, sometimes semi-divine; and the theme being of moral, national or religious importance. They are synonymous with big budget films, where even the ideas and vision are extra large.

According to Wikipedia, epic films fall into five main categories: religious, romantic, historical, war, and ‘sword and sandal’ epics. They run for more than two hours, always.

Well known Hollywood epics

Best remembered by me, at least, of the historical epic films is Lawrence of Arabia and Godfather, also The King and I and Ben Hur starring Charlton Heston.

The Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston and produced by Cecile B DeMille in the 1960s falls into the category of religious epic, along with the Indian production The Mahabaratha. The most recent of this genre is The Passion of Christ directed by Mel Gibson which raised a storm of controversy and debate.

Romantic epics are varied and numerous. Best remembered are Gone with the Wind (1939), Cleopatra (1963), Dr Zhivago (1965) and Titanic (1997). It surprised me that the Wikipedia article listed Ryan’s Daughter (1970), Out of Africa and English Patient as romantic epic films. They were absolutely remarkable films but to classify them as epics rather surprised me. Maybe cost of production and stellar casts would have propelled these into the romantic epic category.

War epics count such as Longest Day (1960s?), Platoon (1986), Apocalypse Now (1979) and Saving Private Ryan (1998). Bridge over the River Kwai was not listed, surprisingly.

Sword and sandals epics are mostly of the Roman Empire as you would have rightly guessed. Ben Hur again and of course the last of the great epics - The Gladiator with Russell Crowe. This film was a surprise in many ways, taking off on an unfinished script; and starring Crowe - man of few words and unproven up until then in ability to grip an audience. Another surprise was its takings at the Academy Awards where it received twelve nominations and had Crowe winning best actor award, beating many leading men including Tom Hanks.

All these mentioned films and other epics were box office successes with large takings. Titanic grossed 600 million domestically and 1.8 billion worldwide. GWTW holds the record still as the highest earning film, 1.3 billion in the US alone. Maybe it counts more than one screening, years apart.

The epic features of the film Aba

All that written earlier is because from the moment the film Aba got going at the Savoy with me in the audience, I got the urge to compare it with epic films I had seen.

Many reviews of Aba have appeared in the print media. I’ve read most of them. One questioned the historical authenticity of the story of Aba. I felt you could not question Jackson Anthony on this score since he presents a history-based TV program that is excellent and scores high on the historical correctness of what he says.

The film story runs true to the story (legend?) as it appears in print in the translation of the Mahavamsa by Wilhelm Geiger. I read the story of King Pandukabhaya and his uncles in the 1993 edition of the Mahavamsa or the Great Chronicle of Ceylon translated by Geiger and published in New Delhi by Asian Educational Services and found the film ran true to the facts in the historical tome.

On that score, even if Jackson Anthony’s film script deviated slightly from the story as it is narrated in the Mahavamsa, Aba is an epic film. It deals with a historical narration, legend though it may be, of an ancient bit of documented Sri Lankan history revolving around one princely hero. And thus Aba falls into the category of historical epic.

As to the actors, the film can be classed an epic film. A stellar cast has been rounded up by Jackson Anthony to take the principal roles. Princess Unmaada Chitra is played by Sabitha Perera; the Queen Mother excellently by Malini Fonseka; Brahmin Pandula by Ravindra Randeniya in flowing white hair; Neil Alles as King Panduvasudeva and Saumya Liyanage as the idiotic seeming villager, Habara, who protects with his life the young prince, son of Princess Unmaada Chitra. Jackson Anthony’s son plays the important role of Prince Pandukabhaya alias Aba. Newcomer to pivotal roles in the big screen,
Dulani Anuradha plays the multifaceted, responsible-minded, dancing and flirtatious Gumbaka Butha with verve and vivacity. She comes across full of the fun of life when teasing Habara and even when carrying, in a wicker basket, the infant prince to hiding in the village - Doramandalawa.

Of these and other well known actors who took the part of the princes and the paramour of Princess Chitra and his loyal servant, Saumya Liyanage stands out really living the role of the brave, seemingly foolish, emotionally capricious Habara, who executes many intricate dance steps. Was he the dancer that was silhouetted in various postures and dancing poses as backdrop to the listing of credit titles? If he is not nominated for a local Oscar and does not win it, we could deduce something is wrong in the judging film world of Sri Lanka. Saumya popped his big eyes, pouted his full lips, opened his large mouth and lithely twisted his body to perfection – the cunning fool, more clever and sincere than foolish.

Jackson Anthony’s son Sajitha Anutthara plays the title role, that of the young prince, the film narrative starting from the time he was born to the sister of seven princes and exchanged for the girl child born to a handmaiden. The infant is brought up at Doramandalawa as the twin son of the headman whose wife gives birth to a boy just as the young prince is delivered to them by Habara and Gumbaka Butha. The film ends with Aba, a teenager vowing to avenge his uncles’ cruelty to their sister (his mother) and their attempts to murder him.

Some interesting facets of the culture of that time were shown such as when in the house of the headman the birth of his child was delayed so that the villagers could be shown a pair of twins as having been born, the woman is made to pound paddy in a pestle while in labour!

The language spoken by the characters was excellent, quaint yet forceful. One missed much if one went by the subtitling in English.

The music was stunning and the sound track advanced so that one was assailed by sounds emerging from the front of the cinema and the two sides. Nadeeka Guruge gets the kudos for the music, while Chandana Weerasinghe for the choreography.

The film, mercifully did not take too long – around 2 hours. The true Hollywood epic is now cutting down its time of screening. Thus we need not question the film Aba’s entry into the genre of epic film though it did not run for three hours. Thank goodness for that! Even the best must not prolong itself.

Epic films produced by Hollywood and Bollywood have cost immense amounts. We can be sure Jackson Anthony’s film too cost much more than the average Sinhala film. But the expense was justified and we are equally sure he will recoup the cost and more at the box office. A month into the screening of the film, tickets were all sold out at every show, particularly at the weekends.

One is tempted to compare Jodhaa Akbhar to Aba for the simple reason that the heroes in both stories ruled by the sword. In the former film, the young Akbhar initiates his career as the all powerful Moghul prince and then king, while in Aba the very last scene has the young prince bravely holding a sword aloft with the background intonation that he would defeat his uncles and unite the country under his sovereignity. This semblance is acknowledged, but to weigh the two films on the one weighing scale would be unfair. How on earth could a Sri Lankan production equal or surpass a Bollywood epic produced with billions being spent. But what could be said is that Aba is an excellent attempt at bringing an epic film to the Sinhala screen and for this all thanks go to Jackson Anthony.

He is a proven historian and high-rated TV presenter and film star. He has now proven himself to be a successful director/producer of epics for the large screen. We thank him for his film which has raised Sinhala cinema from the doldrums it had sunk to. We wish him well with future productions.

ABC started their streaming service on their website today. Users from the USA are able to watch episodes of Lost, Desperate Houswives, Alias and others right from the website. Unfortunatly they check your IPs origin and decline access if the whois turns out to be from outside the USA. But as always, there is a way around this restriction.

This is slighty complex but you should get used to the procedure. All you need is a http proxy that is hosted inside the USA and does not spill your IP address. To achieve this you need a application that checks proxy servers for those variables. I recommend Charon for this task but you could use other tools as well.

Download Charon from the website mentioned, you don´t need to install it at all, just extract the contents to a directory of your choice.

Fire it up, you have no proxy list yet so you could use google to find some lists or let charon do that for you. Simply select Check Proxies and then Scan Search Engines for new Proxies. Charon will find some proxies that are then displayed in the table. Those are unverified, now select Check Proxies and Check Anonymity of all Proxies. This might take some time. If you only recieve bad and timeouts you have to change one option in charon.

Select Connect Options and chose Use External Judge(s).

Let it test the proxies. If you have enough good ones or a finished test sort the proxies by the Country tab. Only USA proxies are working so we need one of those. The Anonymity tab should state YES. If both are correct right click the line and select Copy to clipboard and Copy selected IP:Port.

Open your browser and paste the proxy address into its proxy settings. For firefox you select Tools >> Options >> Connection Settings >> Manual Proxy Configuration and add the proxy and port there. Close the options and visit the abc streaming site. If you see a Launch button you are ready to enjoy the tv shows. If not try another proxy from the list.

I checked the service with this proxy and it worked flawlessly: 192.104.67.250 port:8080

World's shortest man meets leggiest woman

World's shortest man, leggiest woman meet

LONDON - Trafalgar Square routinely serves as a stage for mimes, jugglers and other acts, but the tourist attraction drew an exceptionally curious crowd Tuesday when the shortest man who can walk met the woman with the longest legs.

He Pingping from Inner Mongolia, China's autonomous region, the world's smallest man sits underneath Svetlana Pankratova from Russia, the Queen of Longest Legs, as they pose at Trafalgar Square in London, Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2008. Pingping, born with primordial dwarfism, holds the Guinness World Record for the smallest man at 74.61 cms (2 feet and 5.37 inches) and Pankratova holds the Guinness World Record for the longest leg of any woman at 132 cms (4 feet 4 inches) in length. He Pingping, of China, was born with a type of dwarfism. He, 20, stands precisely 2 feet 5.37 inches tall.

The pair met to publicize the release of "Guinness World Records 2009." This year's version of the popular book is due out Wednesday.

He called Svetlana Pankratova's legs "very beautiful."

Pankratova, 36, who is Russian but lives in Spain, has legs that are nearly 52 inches long, or more than 4 feet long. Her upper body has nearly typical proportions, giving her a giraffe-like appearance.

Dressed in a bright-blue mini-dress and low-heeled pumps, Pankratova, 36, said she liked her legs, though they can complicate things. "It's hard to find clothes, especially pants," she said.

At just over 6-foot-4, Pankratova isn't the tallest woman on record. Sandy Allen, of Shelbyville, Indiana, who died recently, held that title at 7 feet, 7 inches, according to the book. The book said He is the shortest man who can walk.

The latest edition of the book lists pop star Britney Spears as the most-searched person on the Internet and the television show "Lost" as the most-downloaded show of all time.

The book has been around for half a century. About 3.5 million copies are sold each year, according to editor-in-chief Craig Glenday.

Baggy pants ban "unconstitutional," rules US judge-MUST DO IN Sri Lanka Tooo......

MIAMI (AFP) - A Florida judge has deemed unconstitutional a law banning baggy pants that show off the wearer's underwear, local media reported Tuesday.

AFP/File Photo: A US youngster wearing his pants "half-mast." A Florida judge has deemed unconstitutional a law...

A 17-year-old spent a night in jail last week after police arrested him for wearing low pants in Riviera Beach, southeast Florida.

The law banning so-called "saggy pants" was approved by city voters in March after supporters of the bill collected nearly 5,000 signatures to put the measure on the ballot.

The teen would have received a 150 dollars fine or community service, but he spent the night in jail due to a history of marijuana use, the Palm Beach Post newspaper said.

"Somebody help me," said Palm Beach Circuit Judge Paul Moyle, before giving his decision.

"We're not talking about exposure of buttocks. No! We're talking about someone who has on pants whose underwear are apparently visible to a police officer who then makes an arrest and the basis is he's then held overnight, no bond."

"Your honor, we now have the fashion police," added public defender Carol Bickerstaff, who asked the law be declared "unconstitutional."

The judge agreed with Bickerstaff immediately, reported the Post.

Laws that ban low-slung pants are on the books in several US cities, including Delcambre, Louisiana, where offenders can be fined up to 500 dollars or jailed for up to six months.

Dallas, Texas and Atlanta, Georgia are among the larger US cities considering similar measures.

What is DivX and Xdvid ?

What is DivX?

DivX is the name of a popular new video compression technology developed by DivX, Inc. The format was developed to enable users to play and create high-quality videos in a fast and convenient way, while still maintaining the best quality possible. The DivX codec is currently the most popular MPEG-4 based codec because of its quality, speed and efficiency as well as the wide range of DVD players that support DivX.

If you compare DivX movies to DVDs they're able to offer the same image quality at one-tenth (1/10) the size, which makes them perfectly suited for movie downloads where the bandwidth available usually is limited. This means that you can easily fit a full movie on a single CD, while still maintaining the original image quality of the DVD. The video is usually combined with AC3 or MP3 audio to provide both high quality audio and video. All of these things have contributed to the popularity of the format among those that download movies and videos online.

When you install the DivX codec it essentially works as an add-on to your system, which enables you to compress and decompress video in the DivX format. Once you've installed the DivX codec on your system you will be able to watch DivX videos using Windows Media Player or any other player that supports DivX.

To download and install the codec, goto the DivX codec section.

What is XviD?

XviD is the name of a popular new video codec being developed as an open source project by volunteer programmers from all over the world. The format was created to offer a free alternative to other commercial video codecs, and despite being open source its quality and efficiency has made it one of the most popular video codecs online. While XviD still isn't as widely used as DivX, playback of XviD movies is usually supported in new DVD players nowadays.

The XviD codec makes it possible to compress a full-length DVD-quality movie enough to fit on a single CD (might require 2 CDs depending on the length of the movie), while still maintaining the original image quality. Despite the fact that XviD movies offer higher quality video at smaller file sizes they take less time to encode than MPEG-2 due to the incredible compression technology. The video is usually combined with MP3 or AC3 audio to enable both high quality video and audio. These factors and the fact that the codec is distributed for free has contributed to the success of the format.

When you install the XviD codec it basically provides your system with specific instructions how to compress and decompress video in the XviD format. Once you've installed the XviD codec on your system you will be able to play XviD videos using Windows Media Player or any other XviD-enabled player.

What are subtitles?

A subtitle is the text at the bottom of the screen in a movie. The purpose of a subtitle is usually to translate the movie dialogue from a language the viewer doesn't understand to one they do. Subtitles can also be helpful for people who for some reason have trouble following the dialogue in a movie.

Watching movies with subtitles

To watch DivX/XviD movies with subtitles you first need to install a DirectShow filter for Windows Media Player which is called DirectVobSub. To install DirectVobSub, follow these easy steps:

1) Download DirectVobSub
2) Run the exe-file to start the installation

After you've installed DirectVobSub on your system, Windows Media Player should be able to show subtitles in DivX and XviD movies. However, you will also need to download a separate subtitle file before you get subtitles in a movie. Once you've downloaded a subtitle for a movie you simply place it in the same folder as the DivX or XviD movie you want to watch. Then you have to make sure the filename of the movie and subtitle is the same. Otherwise you will have to rename the subtitle file, so the player understands that they are associated. Also make sure that the subtitle file has the ".sub" or ".srt" file-extension. Finally, you play the movie and hopefully you have subtitles in it.

Where can I download free movies?

While there are plenty of ways to download free movies and videos online, the fastest and easiest way to download movies is by using file-sharing programs. These programs are specifically designed to make searching and downloading files easy. There are also some web sites that offer free movie downloads.

Why are people downloading movies online?

Most likely because it's a fast and convenient way to get movies. You simply start the download and after a couple of hours you have a full-length DVD-quality movie ready to watch without leaving your home. All that is needed to download movies is a computer with an Internet connection, then you're set.

What has made movie downloading so popular?

There are a number of factors that have made movie downloading so popular the last couple of years. The most important is the development of more advanced video/audio compression technologies that allow the movies to be compressed to much smaller sizes than before. Also, the popularity of broadband Internet connections have made it possible to download movies faster than ever before. The availability of free movie downloads online has also gotten a lot of media attention lately.

What is needed to play movie downloads?

All that is needed to play movie downloads is a media player of your choice and the proper video/audio codecs. To play XviD movie downloads you need to install the XviD codec. To play DivX movie downloads you need to install the DivX codec. You might also need to install the AC3 codec to get surround sound.

What can I do if I'm having problems playing movie downloads?

To resolve common playback problems with movie downloads, see our XviD FAQ and DivX FAQ.

What affects the quality of movie downloads?

The most important factor affecting the quality of movie downloads is the source of the movie. If the movie download comes from a good source then there are basically two factors that determine the quality of the movie, the video codec used and the size of the movie. To get the best quality possible when you download movies, make sure that the source is good and that the movie uses an advanced video codec such as XviD/DivX.

What size is a typical movie download?

The file size of movie downloads vary a lot depending on the length of the movie and the bit rate used to encode the movie. You should expect a typical full-length XviD/DivX movie to be about 600MB-700MB in size. If the movie is longer than 2 hours it will require even more space to ensure that the quality is good.

How long does it take to download movies?

It will always help if you have a fast Internet connection, but your download speed also depends on the speed of the server/source you are downloading a movie from. The following table should give you an idea of how long it would take to download a 700MB file (typical movie download) using your Internet connection under perfect circumstances.

Connection speed
56Kbps
128Kbps
256Kbps
512Kbps
1Mbps
2Mbps
10Mbps
Transfer speed

1Mbps is equivalent to 1000Kbps.

Please note that the transfer speeds and times quoted above are based on the maximum speed of your Internet connection. If you're downloading movies from a fast server/source then you might be able to achieve these transfer times, but in general your downloads will most likely take longer.

How do I play movie downloads on my DVD player?

The first thing you should do is to check the DVD Player Compatibility list to determine if your DVD player supports XviD/DivX playback. If your DVD player supports XviD/DivX playback then you simply need to record the movie to a CD/DVD and it should play right away. If your DVD player doesn't support XviD/DivX you first need to convert the movie to the MPEG-2 format and then record the movie as a SVCD or DVD, depending on what format(s) your DVD player supports. You can find helpful video conversion and authoring guides at VideoHelp.com.

How do I watch movie downloads on my TV?

If you have a graphics card with TV-out support then you should be able to connect your computer directly to your TV and watch XviD/DivX movies on it. If you don't have one you should be able to find one for about the same price as a regular graphics card. You will also need a cable to connect your computer to your TV. Then you simply configure your computer to send the video to your TV when you play XviD/DivX movies.
