The Buddha - The True Peacemaker

The Buddha - The True Peacemaker

At the present time, globally people talk about peace as a burning issue in our human society. Though most people very much prefer to live in a peaceful atmosphere and an untroubled environment, some unwise and uncivilised citizens, leaders, politicians and their henchmen create terrible fear and danger within our global society.

Even though innumerable peace talks, forums, conferences, meetings and negotiations endlessly take place, there are no signs or gestures to console or comfort ourselves by achieving this so-called peace.

It is disgraceful and contemptible that in the name of peace, hypocritical and insincere members of our human family incite and encourage unacceptable anarchy to achieve their own personal hidden agendas.

Honesty, sincerity and veracity should be present in one’s mind to achieve true peace.

The Supreme Teacher the Buddha, 2550 years ago very precisely emphasised the way and the perfect path to practise to achieve lasting peace in many discourses, during his forty five years ministry.

Once the Buddha said: “Hatred is never appeased by hatred in this world; by non-hatred alone is hatred appeased. This an eternal Law”.

According to above-mentioned words of the Blessed One, we can understand the key reason and main cause of never ending and irresolvable violence and war, which have been destroying many innocent lives and shelters for many years.

Negotiations and so-called peace talks have not yet contributed any element or ingredient to reduce violence and achieve peace. They have all become lip services. Greediness for power and money are the foremost hidden agendas and aspirations in the minds of most envoys, delegates and politicians in our global society, today.

While preaching soothing words for unwise people by paraphrasing the Buddha’s and other religious Masters’ words, those who claim to be as Buddhists, Christians and so on, the power and money hungry people openly and blatantly violate the basic principles and guidelines, which the Blessed One and foundering fathers of other religions compassionately advised us to follow and practise to achieve peace, harmony and unity in this life.

The Buddha clearly described the advantages of cultivating of wholesome qualities and the disadvantages of practising unwholesome qualities. As a virtuous and righteous person, one should reflect on one’s conduct and behaviour to ensure whether it is beneficial for oneself and for others.

It is important to note, certain deeds, although may be beneficial for oneself, could be detrimental to others and therefore, should be avoided, if this remarkable advice of the Buddha is followed no one will suffer in the name of violence and war.

Lack of sublime qualities such as loving kindness, compassion, sympathetic-joy and equanimity in some humans, have caused cruel activities and violence to worsen and intensify.

Though many religionists boast of their own dogmas and credos the dearth of their spiritual practice along with their followers has resulted in the decline of spiritual advancement.

Inability to manage one’s anger, incapability to share resources with others, violation of human rights and craving for equal opportunities are visible and ostensible facts which result from lack of sublime qualities.

As a true peacemaker who achieved the incomparable and remarkable innermost peace called Nibbana, The Buddha has tremendously emphasised the way to practise metta (loving kindness) to attain inner peace, as well as creating a fearless environment for others.

The Blessed One has clearly taught us that the paramount cause and the driving force is craving which builds and fosters turmoil and chaos within oneself that could explode out verbally and physically.

In the Dhammapada the Buddha profoundly explains thus:

“Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is their chief; they are all mind-wrought. If with an impure mind a person speaks or acts, suffering follows him like the wheel that follows the foot of the ox.”

Even though these sterling words are more than 2550 years old, they are greatly accepted and followed by the wise and are practical and realistic, even today.

In his profound teachings, the Four Sublime qualities -(Brahma Viharas)are the key factors which one should cultivate and develop within oneself and spread throughout our global society to achieve inner peace and outer peace.

The Four Sublime qualities (Brahma viharas) are:

Metta - Universal friendliness or loving kindness.

Karuna - Compassion.

Mudita - Sympathetic-joy or rejoicing for others welfare, prosperity, success and progress.

Upekkha - Indiscrimination, equanimity, impartiality and see things as they are with Unshaken mind.

If whoever is aware of and accepts the Law of Kamma, he will never allow for any unwholesome thought to implant and perpetrate into words and deeds.

The Blessed One discovered and established an incomparable and unsurpassed path of purification which can be treading, experienced and attained by the wise; those who are able to train and tame their mind by observing and investigating their own hidden tendencies and ulterior motives are called wise. This is the only way to eradicate violence and to achieve true peace.

Once the first Prime Minister of India Pandit Shri Jawaharlal Nehru said:

“Peace is not a relationship of nation. It is condition of mind brought about by a serenity of soul. Peace is not merely the absence of war. It is also a state of mind. Lasting peace can come only to peaceful people.”

Pandit Shri Jawaharlal Nehru has modestly asserted and proudly stated that the only path to achieve peace is the Buddha’s path of purification many times during his tenure as a Prime Minister.

Let me quote the words of Pandit Nehru again.

“If we follow the principles Enunciated by the Buddha we will ultimately win Peace and tranquility for the world.”

It is also commendable that Mr. A.T.Ariyaratne, well renowned leader of Sarvodaya Movement, has been guiding and persuading people to approach and achieve peace by cultivating and practising metta - loving kindness.

He is a good living example to everyone who teaches how to achieve real inner peace, not only by preaching but also by cultivating and practising. This is always admired and highly appreciated by the wise.

According to Buddha Dhamma, what you sow you may reap. Every time one gets angry at anyone or anything, under any circumstance, that person creates unwholesome kamma and definitely consequences will be dangerous and he will create unhappiness among others too.

But, on the other hand, if one concentrates on putting his own mind at peace by cultivating patience he will experience peace then and there and in future too.

This is the only way how we can spread peace through the world. Each and everyone will first have to develop one’s own mind and cultivate good and act accordingly and then we will be able to generate peace and spread peace through our actions to the world outside.

When you plant the seeds of war, you get war; if you plant the seeds of peace, you get peace.

“He is truly virtuous, wise and righteous, who neither for his own sake nor for the sake of another (does any wrong), who does crave for sons, wealth, or kingdom, and does not desire his own success by unjust means” - By the Supreme Master - The Buddha.

May all beings be well and happy! May all beings be free from violence! May all beings be at peace!

Sai Baba - eighty-two years of love in action

In his Christmas Divine Discourse Sai Baba once declared, “Love must take the form of Service Seva; Seva must take the form of food for the hungry, solace for the forlorn, consolation for the suffering.”

He exhorted us to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ on this Holy Christmas Day. His teachings were a

Sri Sathya Sai Baba

command for all to work, worship and love humanity with a heart full of compassion, selflessness and purity. This type of love manifested by mankind He declared as the way to God. ‘Show love for humanity in God actions’ declared Swami.

Mother Ishwar Amma once pleaded with Swami when he was revealing His Divine Powers and Glory. She was convinced that Swami had made His advent into this world as the avatar of this yuga.

She prayed to Him to grant her three boons: (i) to provide a small dispensary for the benefit of the poor villagers and residents of Puttaparthi. (ii) to build a small school for the children of Parthi who were deprived of any type of education, (iii) to provide drinking water facility for the villagers. None of these essential necessities was available for the Puttaparthi villagers.

Mother Ishwaramma prayed for these needs with a purity of heart and compassion for the needy, unmindful of her own needs. As we now realise Baba’s ways are unfathomable! His ways are mysterious. He neither says “Yes” nor “No”. Silent and subtle are the divine ways. One has to wait for the ‘Time’. Time is timeless eternity.

So Mother Ishwaramma had to wait till her time. Today Mother Ishwaran is no more but what she prayed for has been fulfilled by the Lord, All her three boons have been fructified by Baba. They are divine manifestations of love in action.

In place of a small humble dispensary, which was Mother’s first prayer, there now stand magnificent hospitals which are palatial in concept. These are the super speciality hospitals of Higher Medical Sciences. Several lamps light up these architecturally brilliant edifices epitomising Swami’s love in action.

In them we visualise the divine manifestation of His power and glory, purity of spirit, mystery and magnificence, truth and beauty and concertised in an architectural structure projecting and revealing to the world “THAT” Divine Love of God for His creation.

Villagers who were earlier unable to get any kind of treatment are now at the receiving end of free medical treatment and free education of the most superior quality and of the highest order. The Sathya Sai University is a ‘Wonder’ monument and it answers Mother’s second prayer for education. It is a true relevation of the Almighty Will and love in action.

This unique University does not merely provide a ‘bookish’ education and knowledge but, as Baba reiterates, it also teaches both students and professors discipline and devotion.

Education at the Sai University promotes the integration of all personalities in students and helps them to evolve towards the attainment of the highest goal of education - namely, character (through the practice of the highest human values) - Sathya (Truth), Dharama (Righteousness), Shanthi (Peace), Prema (Love), and Ahimsa (Non-Violence).

Swami expects students who pass out of the University to be ‘embodiments of natural sweetness’. His wisdom disintegrates the mental make up of the students and of the falsities hitherto acquired, (knowledge) of the objective world, and arouses instead an awareness that radiates their inner spirit to a wisdom underlying the nature of the Universe - that it is not the ‘padartha’ but it is also the ‘parartha’ - the non-material world.

Thus, Baba’s University does not merely confer Degrees and academic qualifications. He calls them ‘begging bowls’ used to obtain jobs here and abroad. Rather he upholds an education based on right-living and good actions thereby conferring Faith, Character and Confidence. Education is to awaken the student towards attainment of the highest goal of life.

Baba’s acts of love are constant reminders of our own latent Inner Reality - love. Baba’s love in action reveals the truth that our body, sense and mind are mere ‘vestures’ concealing the true reality of our being.

This abiding Principle of Love He declares should be the ‘Prompting’ principle of all our actions. From Baba granting of the humblest gift to His creation of gigantic architectural structures we see this prompting principle in action..... a substantial verification of His Love in Action.

Speaking about one’s performance of duty, Baba insists that we must do our duty without hope of being entitled to fruits thereof. Duty should be performed with selfless love. Prema-sadhana alone should be our motivating principle.

His service to mankind is a form of devotion. We should therefore perform all actions as a form of service with devotion, surrendering them with love for God.

Thus says the Gita; “A man engaged in devotional service rids himself of both good and bad reactions.” (Gita ii: 51) Such a service alone can show him the differences between service done with devotion and that which is done for fruitive results of with desire of ‘proprietorship’.

Baba’s love in action demonstrates a kind of Transcendental Knowledge of the ‘Personality’ of God, an imperishable science of yoga. As it is declared in the Gita by Sri Krishna, Baba is ‘Identifiable’ with the same declaration.

“Although I am unborn and my transcendental body never deteriorates, and although I am Lord of all living entities, I still appear in every millennium” (Gita; iv 6.)

Through love in action Baba shows us the way to serve mankind without attachment to the modes of material nature. Transcendental Knowledge is sought through love in action.

But, In Sri Lanka, most people don't reckon him like other countries.

God Iyappan - the fasting begins

God Iyappan - the fasting begins

God Iyappan is worshipped during the Kaliyuga Era. He is widely believed to overcome troubles and sorrows

God Iyappan

of all people. As Human beings we live in a fast moving modern society, while following, with much difficulties, the traditions and cultures inherited from our ancestors.

During the fasting period Hindus are bound to follow the defined norms of a fast. It is through this that they obtain the real outcome of a fast.

The purpose of fasting is that it is healthy for the body. The organs in the digesting process get an opportunity to relax and the system is refined and proper blood circulation is restored.

This provides one, a healthy, peaceful and long life. Those who fast are expected to lead a very humble life. They should refrain from killing animals for food to get God’s direct blessings.

Observing the fast for God Iyappan leads one in this correct path. Devotees ceremonially initiated the fasting period last Saturday, November 17, at Aluthmawatha Ananda Iyappan temple with a Ganapathi Homam, in view of Sabarimalai Iyappan Yathra.

Iyappan Fasting

Those who observe the Iyappan fast will have to take a normal bath (no hot water) in the mornings and evenings. They will have to apply Santhanam and Kunkumam to the Iyappan image hanging around their neck, light a lamp and incense stick to the Iyappan photo in the shrine room and worship and at the end of the prayer offer milk, plantain or sugar candy.

God Iyappan is said to have gone to the jungle without a second thought in search of tiger milk to cure his

mother. He loves his parents. Thus, he expects his devotees too to love their parents.

The devotees have to worship their parents and get their blessings and see that they treat them well specially during the fasting period.

On the first day of the Tamil month Karthika, the fasting begins. Devotees can start the fast with the help of a guru or their parents. Thereafter they will strictly have to be pure in their heart, speech and conduct.

The fasting period consists of 41 days. They can skip one meal a day and refrain from afternoon nap, strictly abstain from gambling, cinema, cigarettes and alcohol.

These restrictions would help one relieve of the bad habits and enlighten him of the good aspects the world offers.

Devotees have to refrain from white clothing and footwear during the fasting period. Refraining from footwear helps them prepare for the Padha Yathra they have to observe at the end of the fast, along the Sabarimalai mountain.

They must refrain from using perfumes, mattress and pillow. They must also abstain from thinking or talking evil. They should possess the thought that “I am prepared to sacrifice anything for you God, your grace is what is more important to me and my family”.

During the fasting period it is advisable to engage in worshipping Iyappan and singing his Banjan songs.

When the devotees meet they greet saying ‘Samy Saranam’. This implies that once they start observing the fast they are treated as Iyappan themselves. This makes one feel he is divine and is expected to behave accordingly.
