What is DivX and Xdvid ?

What is DivX?

DivX is the name of a popular new video compression technology developed by DivX, Inc. The format was developed to enable users to play and create high-quality videos in a fast and convenient way, while still maintaining the best quality possible. The DivX codec is currently the most popular MPEG-4 based codec because of its quality, speed and efficiency as well as the wide range of DVD players that support DivX.

If you compare DivX movies to DVDs they're able to offer the same image quality at one-tenth (1/10) the size, which makes them perfectly suited for movie downloads where the bandwidth available usually is limited. This means that you can easily fit a full movie on a single CD, while still maintaining the original image quality of the DVD. The video is usually combined with AC3 or MP3 audio to provide both high quality audio and video. All of these things have contributed to the popularity of the format among those that download movies and videos online.

When you install the DivX codec it essentially works as an add-on to your system, which enables you to compress and decompress video in the DivX format. Once you've installed the DivX codec on your system you will be able to watch DivX videos using Windows Media Player or any other player that supports DivX.

To download and install the codec, goto the DivX codec section.

What is XviD?

XviD is the name of a popular new video codec being developed as an open source project by volunteer programmers from all over the world. The format was created to offer a free alternative to other commercial video codecs, and despite being open source its quality and efficiency has made it one of the most popular video codecs online. While XviD still isn't as widely used as DivX, playback of XviD movies is usually supported in new DVD players nowadays.

The XviD codec makes it possible to compress a full-length DVD-quality movie enough to fit on a single CD (might require 2 CDs depending on the length of the movie), while still maintaining the original image quality. Despite the fact that XviD movies offer higher quality video at smaller file sizes they take less time to encode than MPEG-2 due to the incredible compression technology. The video is usually combined with MP3 or AC3 audio to enable both high quality video and audio. These factors and the fact that the codec is distributed for free has contributed to the success of the format.

When you install the XviD codec it basically provides your system with specific instructions how to compress and decompress video in the XviD format. Once you've installed the XviD codec on your system you will be able to play XviD videos using Windows Media Player or any other XviD-enabled player.

What are subtitles?

A subtitle is the text at the bottom of the screen in a movie. The purpose of a subtitle is usually to translate the movie dialogue from a language the viewer doesn't understand to one they do. Subtitles can also be helpful for people who for some reason have trouble following the dialogue in a movie.

Watching movies with subtitles

To watch DivX/XviD movies with subtitles you first need to install a DirectShow filter for Windows Media Player which is called DirectVobSub. To install DirectVobSub, follow these easy steps:

1) Download DirectVobSub
2) Run the exe-file to start the installation

After you've installed DirectVobSub on your system, Windows Media Player should be able to show subtitles in DivX and XviD movies. However, you will also need to download a separate subtitle file before you get subtitles in a movie. Once you've downloaded a subtitle for a movie you simply place it in the same folder as the DivX or XviD movie you want to watch. Then you have to make sure the filename of the movie and subtitle is the same. Otherwise you will have to rename the subtitle file, so the player understands that they are associated. Also make sure that the subtitle file has the ".sub" or ".srt" file-extension. Finally, you play the movie and hopefully you have subtitles in it.

How To Download Movies ?

How To Download Movies ?

Where can I download free movies?

While there are plenty of ways to download free movies and videos online, the fastest and easiest way to download movies is by using file-sharing programs. These programs are specifically designed to make searching and downloading files easy. There are also some web sites that offer free movie downloads.

Why are people downloading movies online?

Most likely because it's a fast and convenient way to get movies. You simply start the download and after a couple of hours you have a full-length DVD-quality movie ready to watch without leaving your home. All that is needed to download movies is a computer with an Internet connection, then you're set.

What has made movie downloading so popular?

There are a number of factors that have made movie downloading so popular the last couple of years. The most important is the development of more advanced video/audio compression technologies that allow the movies to be compressed to much smaller sizes than before. Also, the popularity of broadband Internet connections have made it possible to download movies faster than ever before. The availability of free movie downloads online has also gotten a lot of media attention lately.

What is needed to play movie downloads?

All that is needed to play movie downloads is a media player of your choice and the proper video/audio codecs. To play XviD movie downloads you need to install the XviD codec. To play DivX movie downloads you need to install the DivX codec. You might also need to install the AC3 codec to get surround sound.

What can I do if I'm having problems playing movie downloads?

To resolve common playback problems with movie downloads, see our XviD FAQ and DivX FAQ.

What affects the quality of movie downloads?

The most important factor affecting the quality of movie downloads is the source of the movie. If the movie download comes from a good source then there are basically two factors that determine the quality of the movie, the video codec used and the size of the movie. To get the best quality possible when you download movies, make sure that the source is good and that the movie uses an advanced video codec such as XviD/DivX.

What size is a typical movie download?

The file size of movie downloads vary a lot depending on the length of the movie and the bit rate used to encode the movie. You should expect a typical full-length XviD/DivX movie to be about 600MB-700MB in size. If the movie is longer than 2 hours it will require even more space to ensure that the quality is good.

How long does it take to download movies?

It will always help if you have a fast Internet connection, but your download speed also depends on the speed of the server/source you are downloading a movie from. The following table should give you an idea of how long it would take to download a 700MB file (typical movie download) using your Internet connection under perfect circumstances.

Connection speed
56Kbps
128Kbps
256Kbps
512Kbps
1Mbps
2Mbps
10Mbps
Transfer speed
7 KB/s
16 KB/s
32 KB/s
64 KB/s
128 KB/s
256 KB/s
1.25 MB/s
Transfer time
28 hours, 27 mins
12 hours, 27 mins
6 hours, 13 mins
3 hours, 7 mins
1 hours, 33 mins
47 mins
12 mins

1Mbps is equivalent to 1000Kbps.

Please note that the transfer speeds and times quoted above are based on the maximum speed of your Internet connection. If you're downloading movies from a fast server/source then you might be able to achieve these transfer times, but in general your downloads will most likely take longer.

How do I play movie downloads on my DVD player?

The first thing you should do is to check the DVD Player Compatibility list to determine if your DVD player supports XviD/DivX playback. If your DVD player supports XviD/DivX playback then you simply need to record the movie to a CD/DVD and it should play right away. If your DVD player doesn't support XviD/DivX you first need to convert the movie to the MPEG-2 format and then record the movie as a SVCD or DVD, depending on what format(s) your DVD player supports. You can find helpful video conversion and authoring guides at VideoHelp.com.

How do I watch movie downloads on my TV?

If you have a graphics card with TV-out support then you should be able to connect your computer directly to your TV and watch XviD/DivX movies on it. If you don't have one you should be able to find one for about the same price as a regular graphics card. You will also need a cable to connect your computer to your TV. Then you simply configure your computer to send the video to your TV when you play XviD/DivX movies.

Batman back with ‘The Dark Knight'

Batman back with ‘The Dark Knight'

The Dark Knight, an American superhero film, based on the DC comics character ‘Batman’ has been released at the Liberty Cinema Colombo.

Directed by Christopher Nolan, the film is part of Nolan's 'Batman' film series and a sequel to 2005's 'Batman Begin' and Christian Bale plays the lead role. In this latest Batman series, the film focuses on Batman's fight against a new villain, the Joker (Heath Ledger) and his relationships with district attorney Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart) and his old friend and love interest assistant D.A. Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal).

The film begins with the Joker robbing a Mob-owned bank with his accomplices, whom he tricks into killing each other before killing the last one himself. That night, a trio of Batman impersonators interrupts a meeting between mobsters and the Scarecrow. The real Batman appears and apprehends all of the criminals and impostors, but suffers injuries. This leads him to re-design the bat suit. Batman and Lieutenant James Gordon contemplate including new district attorney Harvey Dent in their plan to eradicate the Mob, as he could be the public hero Batman cannot be. While hosting a fundraiser for Dent, Wayne discovers that the new D.A. is dating Rachel Dawes.

When Mob bosses meet to discuss Batman, Gordon, and Dent, a Chinese mobster accountant, Lau, informs the gang leaders he has hidden their money to pre-empt a plan Gordon has hatched to seize the mobsters' funds. The Joker arrives unexpectedly, offering to kill Batman for half of their money, but the offer is refused. After Batman successfully abducts Lau in Hong Kong and delivers him to the Gotham City police, the mobsters agree to hire the Joker. The Joker tells Gotham that if Batman does not turn himself in to the police and publicly reveal his identity, people will die each day. Public officials, including Commissioner Gillian B. Loeb and the judge presiding over the Mob trials, are among the murdered. Wayne decides to reveal himself. Before he can, Dent announces that he is Batman and is arrested, as part of a plan to draw the Joker out of hiding. The Joker attempts to ambush the police convoy carrying Dent, but Batman and Gordon intervene and arrest him. Gordon is appointed Commissioner.

At the police station, Batman interrogates the Joker, who reveals that Dawes and Dent have been captured by corrupt police and placed in warehouses rigged with explosives on opposite sides of the city; they are far enough apart that Batman cannot save them both. Batman leaves to save Dawes, while Gordon and the police head after Dent. With the help of a bomb planted at the police station, the Joker escapes with Lau. Having been deceived by the Joker, Batman arrives at Dent's location in time to save him, but the left side of Dent's face is disfigured in the explosion. Gordon does not arrive in time to save Dawes and she is killed. In the hospital, Dent is driven to madness over the loss of Dawes. The Joker frees Dent from the hospital and convinces him to exact revenge on the corrupt cops and mobsters responsible, as well as Batman and Gordon.

The Dark Knight was filmed primarily in Chicago, as well as in several other locations in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Hong Kong.

The X-Files , Now In Cinemas ...........

X Files Opens

Famous FBI double, Molder and Scully have been summoned to open another X file with the latest sci-fi 'X Files: I want to Believe' and the film is now being released at Liberty Cinema, Colombo.

Fox Mulder and Dana Scully played by David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson in the stars of the TV series are called back to duty by the FBI in the latest direction of Chris Carter, famed for his award winning television serial and film on the title 'X Files'.

The second feature film based on Carter's TV series The X-Files, following the 1998 film, it was first anticipated in November 2001 to follow the conclusion of the ninth season of the TV series. However the production dragged till 2007 and it was finally released on July 23 at Hollywood.

Many of those involved in the film, including Carter, Duchovny and 20th Century Fox, have spoken of its story as one that would stand apart from the alien abduction. "We're looking at the movies as stand-alones. They're not necessarily going to have to deal with the mythology," Carter described the film.
When a group of women are abducted in the wintry hills of rural Virginia, the only clues to their disappearance are the grotesque human remains that begin to turn up in snow banks along the highway. With officials desperate for any lead, a disgraced priest's questionable visions send local police on a wild goose chase and straight to a bizarre secret medical experiment that may or may not be connected to the women's disappearance.

Its a case right out of The X-Files. But the FBI closed down its investigations into the paranormal years ago. And the best team for the job is ex-agents Fox Mulder and Dr. Dana Scully, who have no desire to revisit their dark past. Still, the truth of these horrific crimes is out there somewhere...and it will take Mulder and Scully to find it.

Amanda Peet, Billy Connolly, Alvin "Xzibit" Joiner, Mitch Pileggi, Callum Keith Rennie, Adam Godley, Xantha Radley, Sarah-Jane Redmond, Nicki Aycox and Fagin Woodcock. The film was shot in Vancouver and Pemberton, in British Columbia, Canada.

According to the co-scriptwriter Spotnitz, the script was written specifically for these locations and filming began in December 2007 in Vancouver and shooting finished on March 11, 2008.

In 1992 Carter began developing projects for Twentieth Century Fox Television, creating "The X Files" (1993), which was the winner of the Golden Globe for Best Drama in 1995 and 1997, Emmy-nominated three times for Best Drama, and winner of a Peabody Award for Excellence in Broadcasting. In 1996 he created the series "Millennium" (1996/I) and in 1999 "Harsh Realm" (1999). For his work on The X-Files, Carter has received three Golden Globe Awards (1994, 1996, 1997), a Writers Guild nomination, two Directors Guild nominations, and an Emmy Award nomination.

Prasanna Vithanage's , The New Film Machan

Machan - this is a movie

By Rajpal Abeynayake

Machan
Producer: Prasanna Vithanage
Director: Uberto Pasolini
Plot: The story of the 23 strong
Sri Lanka National Handball
team which disappeared
in 2004, in Germany.

I read a newspaper article which described Machan – - the movie which premiered on Thursday at the National Film Corporation – – as a comedy. In another, the interviewer asked the director, Uberto Pasolini, the producer of the uproarious Oscar winning Full Monty, what he thinks about the “immigration menace.” You don’t need visuals to see how Pasolini squirms at the question. (“I won’t call it a menace, a lot of countries are not handling the issue right,” he ends up saying…)
Machan is about a Sri Lankan “handball team” which wangles an invitation for a sports exchange programme in Germany.
On playing three matches in the tournament – – all 23 Sri Lankans including the coach and manager promptly go missing leaving their dirty linen behind. The German authorities alert the border police.
But none of the players were apprehended - - most disappeared to Italy where there is a considerable community of Sri Lankans.
A comedy, Machan is not, essentially.
It’s however a hilarious though lacerating take based on the Bavaria Handball caper, a true story which hit global headlines in September 2004. Reuters and BBC quoted Hemasiri Fernando, then president of the Sri Lanka Olympic Association as saying, “Sri Lanka does not have a Handball Federation – not even a handball club.”
Most of the players simply did not know the game when they ended up in Bavaria. However three matches were played – - with the Sobraj of the side insisting that “we are in Germany now – and I’m not even a crook here.”

Half lives

What’s good is that the movie captures the half lives of all of these grown men. They led a half life here – – – - some literarily roofless, others digging graves on all shifts, still others living in tenements without electricity but with TVs sent from Italy.
Alberto gives you the full Monty here.
The language is raw – – – the situations are bizarre. For example, the policemen who raid the handball practice sessions end up adding their passports for the journey to Germany.
Machan was first titled “what f– – - handball” but the working title was later changed to Machan.
Just as well.
It’s a movie about men – - half-men leading half lives, desperate to escape the angst and deprivation of their lives.
I wouldn’t proceed to tell you the full story/Monty from here, though not quite on grounds of spoiler alert.
Suffice to say Sri Lanka appears to posses this unique team amalgam even in the most desperate of situations, which can be brought off in any Titanic like setting. (I still remember the year we won the cricket world cup, when a reputed wire service ran a story about how Hashan Tillekeratne washed his clothes in a washing machine in a Sri Lankan home when on tour in England. Hardscrabble as handball we are - even at the best of times…)
This is no Titanic though. It’s a caper in which the foreigners are fooled into granting visas to a whole team which does not know a ball about the game they are supposed to be playing…

Embarrassed

But I glanced back at the foreigners who were staring into the screen - jacket clad and immaculate – from two rows behind me. I felt they didn’t know whether to laugh or to cry. You maybe embarrassed for a moment being a Sri Lankan seeing this movie, and the foreigners behind me were embarrassed being foreigners (…Germans, Italians, Bavarians?) I’m sure judging by their expressions.
I think that says much about the success of the movie.
Ruwanthi De Chickera writes a brilliant script.
The acting is handsome handball slick. Finally, it beats Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid – - or The Sting, in terms of plot hatched and denouement arrived at.
You cannot ask for any better. Hand it to them, ball and all.

‘Mega’ tele series creates havoc In Sri Lanka

‘Mega’ tele series creates havoc

By Sarashi Samarasinghe
‘Mega’ tele series have created havoc in the tele-drama industry today, with many prominent actors and actresses in the field opining that such series were a disturbance to the progress of the industry.

Tele-drama makers voiced their protest along with several of Sri Lanka’s actors and actresses, art directors, technicians, producers, directors and script writers at the Public Library Auditorium on June 5.

“This type of television series first started after Indian mega productions were introduced to the local market by a particular TV channel,” said Tele Makers Guild Treasurer Bennet Ratnayake.

He said that the Tele Makers Guild initially looked at the matter indifferently since they thought that it would be a good challenge to the Indian mega productions. “We thought that these mega tele series would stop after reaching a certain limit,” said Ratnayake.

Ratnayake said that at present there are 12 mega tele series being broadcast over four TV channels and that if this amount were increased with another three mega series, the opportunity of becoming a versatile tele drama creator would be lost forever.
“A total of 107 episode tele-dramas are being put away each year due to these 12 mega tele series, and employment opportunities of 5,885 artistes have been destroyed to date,” said Ratnayake.

Actress, Producer and Director, Sriyani Amarasena said that she had brought up the matter with several other personalities who were involved in these mega productions.
“I asked an actress, a script writer and a director what they thought about this matter and they had various ideas,” said Amarasena.

They had all maintained that they got involved in these mega series because of the financial gains and that they gained no satisfaction from such productions.

“In the period of the 1960s and 1970s, Sinhala cinema received unlimited responses from the audience. Later on it all vanished due to the breakdown of the local film industry. Now the same tragedy has taken place again in the tele-drama industry,” said Amarasena.

She said that such disasters occur when the standards of the creations fall apart.
“Mega tele series serve no purpose. They have no point. They are given the tag ‘mega,’ and they simply drags on for years and years with no ending,” said critic Tissa Abeysekara.
Abeysekara further stated that apart from government television channels, all other TV channels in the country were dependent on the income they receive from TV commercials. “Profits are decided on according to the amount of commercials they air,” said Abeysekara.

He further said that weren’t many good tele-dramas being produced these days and that most of the tele-dramas that were being produced were useless.
“The mega merchants are uprooting the tele-drama industry in Sri Lanka and destroying its fruits,” said Actress Duleeka Marapana.

According to Actor Janak Premalal, a tele-drama production should be based on a very sensitive theme and inspire humane feelings. “The main intention of producing a tele drama is not to show the faces of the actors or actresses close up on the screen,” said Premalal.

Former Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation Chairman cum Actor Sanath Gunatilleke said that such a sorry state had come about since there was no permanent national policy in place with regard to the industry.
He pointed out that it was important to come up with such a policy, which he said would help overcome the problems that the industry is facing today.

Family matters and love relationships

By Sarashi Samarasinghe
It is a story of two young hearts falling in love, respected elders becoming emotional and a helpless mother in search of her ownership rights.

‘Kinduru Kodewwa’ is a combination of it all.
Ananda is involved in gambling and he gets scolded frequently from his wife Susila because of this reason. The family has got two children ,the eldest son is Niroshan and the youngest daughter is Gayesha. Niroshan is presently employed at a Company while Gayesha is still continuing her studies. Niroshan spends a lot of money for his sisters’ education. Ananda and his family survive through the pension which Ananda receives and through Niroshans’ income.

Adjoining Ananda’s house is another family. They are Edward and Sriyani, who have one daughter named as Nimasha. Nimasha wants to start a relationship with Niroshan whereas Sriyani after observing her daughters’ behaviour keeps a close eye on her. As a result there are frequent verbal exchanges between mother and daughter.

There is a boarding house in between these two houses where a young foolish boy named Sarath resides. He keeps trying to build a relationship with Nimasha but Nimasha does not respond. Sriyani gets hold of a parcel which has been kept by Sarath to be given to for Nimasha. Sarath meets Nimasha’s father and conveys to him that he is interested in getting married to Nimasha. Nimashas’ parents rejects Sarath’s proposal saying that he has neither a stable employment nor a permanent residence. Edward and Sriyani challenges Sarath to earn more money and become wealthy. Sarath accepts their challenge and moves away.

One of Niroshans’ friends, Kumudu gets interested in Nimasha and he rings her up all the time saying that he is trying to help her to find a job.

Parallel to these incidents, there is a rich family. The father, Wasantha, is a wealthy gentleman and has recently come down from abroad. He loves his family very much.
Wasanthas’ wife is Rebecca and his only daughter is Sachini.

The popular "POO" - Kung Fu Panda in action

Kung Fu Panda in action
By Susitha R. Fernando
---------The Sunday times

One of the highest grossing films in 2008, ‘Kung Fu Panda', about a panda who aspires to be a Kung Fu warrior is now being screened at the Majestic cinema in Colombo. The animated film about a bear named 'Po' with a passion for martial arts has become a huge hit in China.

Globally, the movie has earned $275 million in just two weeks. Released on June 6, the action animation is directed by Mark Osborne and John Stevenson. The film premiered at the 61st Cannes Film Festival where it received a good response with massive and sustained applause at the end of the film's screening.

Enthusiastic, big and a little clumsy, Po is the biggest fan of Kung Fu around...which doesn't exactly come in handy while working every day in his family's noodle shop. Unexpectedly chosen to fulfill an ancient prophecy, Po's dreams become reality when he joins the world of Kung Fu and studies alongside his idols, the legendary Furious Five -- Tigress, Crane, Mantis, Viper and Monkey -- under the leadership of their guru, Master Shifu. But before they know it, the revengeful and treacherous snow leopard Tai Lung is headed their way, and it's up to Po to defend everyone from the oncoming threat.
Can he turn his dreams of becoming a Kung Fu master into reality? Po puts his heart - and his girth - into the task, and the unlikely hero ultimately finds that his greatest weaknesses turn out to be his greatest strengths.

The film stars the voices of Jack Black, Jackie Chan, Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Lucy Liu, Seth Rogen, David Cross and Ian McShane. Animated by Dreamworks and distributed by Paramount Pictures, the film created controversy in China though it made one of the strongest movies in China in recent years with a grossing of more than $12 million after less than two weeks of its release.

Some Chinese critics has demanded to protest the film because Steven Spielberg, a top executive at DreamWorks, had resigned last February as artistic adviser to the 2008 Beijing Olympics after failing to persuade Chinese officials to do more to help the Darfur region of Sudan.

Another group, backed by the Chinese artist Zhao Bandi, who uses pandas as an inspiration for his work, also called for a boycott, saying the animated film was exploiting a national symbol.
