Final "Harry Potter" movie split into two parts

LOS ANGELES, (Reuters) - Warner Bros. has conjured up some Hollywood magic for the final installment of the wildly popular "Harry Potter" movies, splitting the seventh and final book into two films, the movie studio said.

Part one of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" will debut in late 2010 and be followed months later by part two."We feel that the best way to do the book, and its many fans, justice is to expand the screen adaptation of 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows' and release the film in two parts," Jeff Robinov, president of Warner Bros. Pictures Group, said in a statement.

The first five films in the series have been huge hits with a total global box office nearing $4.5 billion. The sixth movie is now being filmed. The movies are based on British author J.K. Rowling's best-selling fantasy novels about the adventures of boy wizard Harry Potter and his friends as they grow from kids into teenagers at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

"Deathly Hallows," the seventh and final book in Rowling's series, was published last July to huge fanfare, selling some 11.5 million copies in its first 10 days in the United States. But the final volume is a long saga at more than 750 pages, and it is filled with many twists and turns as Harry and his friends Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley wrap up their story lines. Harry faces -- once and for all times -- the dark Lord Voldemort who murdered his parents.

Because of the many adventures in "Deathly Hallows," Rowling, the movies' producers and Warner Bros. all agreed that two movies were necessary to truly tell the end story.

"'The Deathly Hallows' is so rich, the story so dense and there is so much that is resolved that after discussing it with Jo, we came to the conclusion that the two parts were needed to do it justice," said producer David Heyman, who first took the project to Warner Bros. in 1997. The books and movies also have been a huge money maker beyond theater box offices and DVDs. They have spawned products from toys to T-shirts to a planned theme park. By some estimates, "Harry Potter" represents a $20 billion business, so an eighth film will likely only expand the enterprise.

Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry, and his co-stars Emma Watson (Hermione) and Rupert Grint (Ron) are now filming the sixth movie -- "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince." All three have said they would appear in "Deathly Hallows." Warner Bros. is a unit of media giant Time Warner Inc.

	At a recent Q&A at Carnegie Hall, Harry Potter mastermind J.K. Rowling filled in yet another piece of the Potter universe not found (but maybe implied) within the pages of the series - Albus Dumbledore, Hogwarts headmaster and wizard extraordinaire, was gay. Addressing a question about Dumbledore's seemingly non-existent love life, Rowling said: "I always saw Dumbledore as gay…Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald…Don't forget, falling in love can blind us. [He] was very drawn to this brilliant person. This was Dumbledore's tragedy." In fact, at a recent script meeting for the adaptation of the sixth book, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince", after seeing a line in which Dumbledore extols the virtues of the distaff, Rowling was forced to remind director David Yates of Dumbledore's preference for red hot man candy.

First things first: At last night's talk at New York City's Carnegie Hall — an event for thousands of young Harry Potter fans and their parents — J.K. Rowling outed the kindly headmaster.

Responding to a question from a child about Dumbledore's love life, Rowling hesitated and then revealed, "I always saw Dumbledore as gay." Filling in a few more details, she said, "Dumbledore fell in love with Grindelwald.... Don't forget, falling in love can blind us. [He] was very drawn to this brilliant person. This was Dumbledore's tragedy." She added that in a recent meeting about the sixth movie, she spied a line in the script where Dumbledore waxed poetic about a girl, so she was forced to scribble director David Yates a note to correct the situation.

So how did all those lucky kids get to sit in the baronial gilt and red velvet splendor of Carnegie Hall? First they won a sweepstakes event created by Rowling's publisher, Scholastic, and then they flew to New York from all over the country. As I waited in line in the unseasonal muggy New York heat to enter the famous concert hall, I chatted up the father and daughter in front of me. They'd just flown in from Nashville (what's more, their plane had been delayed, so they'd arrived at the concert hall with mere minutes to spare). As I canvassed more families, I found they'd come from all over the country — from as far away as Arizona, Washington, Minnesota, and Texas (it was rumored some came from Hawaii, but I didn't verify that).

When the line, snaking around the block, began moving at 6:30, it moved fast. By 7:00 everyone was seated, the red-jacketed ushers were shushing and closing the box doors, and the event host, MSNBC news anchor Keith Olbermann, took the stage. But not center stage, which was dominated by an enormous, velvet-upholstered, carved wooden chair — a throne, really — planted on a Persian carpet. Gesturing to it, Olbermann joked, "That's not sufficient for someone who'll be signing that many copies" — a reference to the fact that, after the reading, Rowling would be signing a copy of Hallows for every single sweepstakes winner.

The crowd was polite to Olbermann, but when a smiling Rowling finally strode on stage, perfectly blonded and coiffed, fingernails shellacked to a brilliant red, stilettos clicking, they went absolutely mad, screaming, jumping to their feet, even crying. Gently, in true mom fashion, she shushed them, and began to read from the seventh book. She's a brilliant reader, funny and quick, doing all the voices with comic perfection — Ron was abashed and sullen; Hermione, squeaky with rage; Harry, exhausted with the effort to appease the two. (She even made herself giggle in places as she read.) When she finished the crowd rose to its feet again, even as she tried, in vain, to get them sit. "Don't make me cry!" she kept saying. Finally everyone did sit, and the question-and-answer session could begin. The lucky questioners had mostly been chosen in advance (though a few were plucked at random); at least one little girl — 8 years old — could barely reach the microphone.

Neville's love life? "He marries Hannah Abbott!" she announced as the crowd squealed its appreciation. (What's more, Hannah becomes proprietress of The Leaky Cauldron, so Neville becomes cool to his students.)

Why is it Molly Weasley who kills Bellatrix? One, "Molly is a very good witch," even though most people don't realize it. And two, "Bellatrix is as obsessed with Voldemort as Molly is consumed with maternal love." What was it like to finish book seven? "It felt like a bereavement." Were there intentional similarities between Voldemort and Hitler? Yes, there were. The books, she said, were "a plea for an end to hatred, to bigotry" as well as a lesson for kids "to question authority.... You should not assume the establishment tells you the truth." Did Hagrid ever find love? Alas, no (though that had something more to do with the rarity of giantesses than any personality defect on Hagrid's part). To one boy, who revealed his dad had read the series, but not his mom, she said, "If I've got time to write 'em, she's got time to read 'em!" As the crowd roared with laughter, she added, "Is your mom here? Who did you come with?" (Dad, not Mom.)

By 8:20 it was over — the talking part, anyway. Rowling, flexing her hands, announced she had to limber up in order to sign all the books, which were stacked in enormous piles next to the stage. Was she really going to do scrawl her distinctive signature that many times? Yes, she was — and the kids, who were now going to be within touching distance of her, became downright emotional.

As for me, a member of the press, I was shunted back out into the hot October night, where it had started to rain. "That was great!" shouted a reporter next to me. Yes, it was. Like those kids, I'll remember it for the rest of my life.

On the train ride home, as I mulled over the evening, I kept trying to figure out which my favorite book of the series was. Four? Seven? Five? I've got a great argument for each of those. But I just couldn't make up my mind. All of you out there — can any of you say what your favorite is?

The Battle of Hogwarts, the world of Harry Potter, has come to a halt, and thousands of fans over the world mourn the end of a series that captivated readers around the world.
There won’t be any more Harry Potter books until and unless J.K. Rowling decides to write another series, and I seriously doubt that she would do so.
I started to read the Harry Potter series as a 13-year-old kid and I never thought that I would be a great fan. A friend of mine was reading a book, which had cover of a boy with a wand, and I found the picture quite interesting. So I got the book and started to read it.
By the time I had read the first two paragraphs, I was already hooked. I saw a whole new world had been created. Rowling had created a world beyond the normal human dreamland.
A land of magic, with witches and wizards – so much more detailed than other magical books. Rowling begins the whole series with a brief description about Harry’s muggle neighbourhood. She introduces a magical world where anyone would love to live.
In Harry Potter’s world, you could do whatever you want simply by casting a spell but under age magic is not allowed, which makes any kid realise that even in a book, kids are not allowed to do whatever they want!
Anyway, the story of Harry Potter begins with a rather unusual way. For those of you who have read the book, this wouldn’t be useful, but my ultimate aim is to convince many people to read the wonderful, dreamland book of Harry Potter.
The story opens with the conspicuous celebration of a normally secretive wizarding world. For many years, it had been terrorised by the evil wizard, Lord Voldemort. The plot begins with Voldemort discovering the Potter family’s hidden refuge, killing Lily and James Potter (Harry Potter’s parents). However, when he attempted to murder their infant son, Harry, the ‘Avada Kedavra’ killing curse he cast rebounded upon him. Voldemort’s body was destroyed, but his spirit survived: he was neither dead nor alive.
Harry, meanwhile, was left with a distinctive lightning bolt-shaped scar on his forehead, the only physical sign of Voldemort’s curse. Harry is the only known survivor of the killing curse, and Voldemort’s mysterious defeat causes the wizarding community to dub Harry, ‘The Boy Who Lived.’
After his parents’ death, Dumbledore (head master of Hogwarts school of wizards) sends Hagrid, a ‘half-giant’ to deliver Harry to his only living relatives, the cruel and non-magical Dursleys, consisting of Uncle Vernon, a bad-tempered uncle with hardly any neck; Aunt Petunia, a long-necked woman who appears to absolutely loathe Harry; and Dudley, their spoiled, overweight son. They attempt in vain to rid him of his magical powers, hide his magical heritage, and severely punish him after any strange occurrences.
It is a book which shows the true value of friendship. Ron and Hermione are Harry’s strength in his dark and cheerful days; they assist him in all his missions. From then onwards the war between Harry and Lord Voldemort begins. The war between good and evil, for justice and order, live or die... this is a book that everyone should read!

Hundreds of Harry Potter fans crammed into London's Leicester Square in torrential rain for the European premiere of the fifth film.

The film's star Daniel Radcliffe arrived clutching an umbrella as fans' chants of "Harry, Harry, Harry" drowned out the sound of thunder.

He was joined by author JK Rowling, who said that it was "fantastic" to see the crowds of fans.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix opens in the UK on 12 July.

Rowling spoke of finishing the final book in the series, which is published on 21 July.

"Finishing it was very, very emotional," she said. "It's been a hell of a month. I'll want to know what the people in my house think of it."

Asked what plans she had for the near future Rowling said: "I'm looking forward to going on holiday."

Radcliffe, 17, who was joined by his co-stars Emma Watson (Hermione Granger) and Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), returns to the role of the student wizard, which he first played at the age of 10.

He admitted that the new film is darker than previous ones.

"Toward the end there's not many laughs to be had," he said. "While there's not actually direct comedy, there's some really heartfelt emotion."

Speaking of his first on-screen clinch with Katie Leung, who plays Cho Chang, he said: "She's a very good kisser."

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix sees Harry bring together a group of apprentice wizards and witches at his Hogwarts school to battle a growing evil.

Actor Daniel Radcliffe was met by hundreds of fans as he attended the world premiere of the fifth Harry Potter film in Tokyo.

Japanese competition winners were among the first to see The Order of the Phoenix movie.

Radcliffe, 17, greeted the crowd in Japanese, saying "Nihon no minasan, Konnichiwa" (hello, people of Japan).

The UK premiere of the film will be held in London on 3 July, and it opens in cinemas on 11 July.

Radcliffe, accompanied by the film's producer David Heyman, was the only one of the film's main stars to make the journey to Tokyo.

He was introduced on to the red carpet amid plumes of smoke and pyrotechnics.

"It's wonderful to come over here and to say hello," said Radcliffe.

"I hope people will be impressed by the new characters, the new performances, and the big battle."

In the movie, Harry experiences his first kiss, with schoolmate Cho Chang, played by actress Katie Leung. Radcliffe has admitted kissing on screen was nothing in comparison to stripping off on stage, as he did in the West End play Equus.

"Once you've been on stage naked in front of 1,000 people you really feel you can do almost anything without inhibition," he told the BBC News website.

"Kissing Katie was a very, very comfortable experience, especially when compared to being naked on stage and blinding horses."

The latest of the Potter film sequels is being released just weeks before the long-awaited seventh and final book is published, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Nearly 1.6m copies of the final Harry Potter book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, have been pre-ordered online ahead of its release on 21 July.

According to online retailer Amazon, JK Rowling's seventh Potter book has become its most pre-ordered product.

Demand has surpassed a previous record of 1.5 million copies ordered ahead of the release of The Half-Blood Prince.

The latest film in the series, The Order of the Phoenix, has its European premiere in London on Tuesday.

The film opens across the globe from 11 July.

It is believed that author Rowling will join the film's stars, including Daniel Radcliffe, Imelda Staunton and Robbie Coltrane, on the red carpet in Leicester Square.

Speculation

The world premiere of the film took place in Tokyo, where Harry Potter has a huge fanbase.
