Sci-fi thriller Inception and Facebook movie The Social Network have won the main prizes at the Writers Guild of America (WGA) awards.

Inception, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, won best original screenplay, while The Social Network was named best adapted screenplay.

The King's Speech, which is nominated for 12 Oscars, was ineligible for the awards and did not make the shortlist.

Winners were announced at simultaneous ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles.

British-born film-maker Christopher Nolan, who wrote, produced and directed Inception, called the award an "incredible honour".

He said the prize would have been more significant if "certain other screenplays" had been nominated, without naming The King's Speech.

The Royal drama is in the running for the best original screenplay Oscar, against Nolan's Inception.

It was ruled out of contention for the WGA awards because it was not produced under contractual guidance issued by the union.

Nolan added that he had been "heartbroken" when the script for Memento had fallen outside WGA guidelines nine years ago.

Social Network writer Aaron Sorkin said: "I wrote a good screenplay, but [director] David Fincher made a great movie."

The writers of Mad Men were honoured for best television drama, with Boardwalk Empire collecting the award for outstanding new TV drama.

British screenwriter Peter Morgan, whose previous credits include The Queen and Frost/Nixon, was awarded for his work on small screen drama The Special Relationship.

The WGAs are seen as a good indicator of which films will win writing plaudits at the Oscars, because many of its members also belong to the Academy.

In "The Expendables," Sylvester Stallone's latest guns-blazing return to the multiplex, the actor/director assembled a dream team of action stars to assist him with the very important work of blowing up everything in sight. Most notably, he recruited onetime big-screen rivals like Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Dolph Lundgren for his latest cinematic mission. An impressive collective of talent, to be sure, but the all-star roster of shoot-'em-up heroes has at least one glaring omission: Jean-Claude Van Damme. Whither the "Muscles from Brussels," star of "Hard Target," "Timecop," and "Universal Solider"?

Van Damme, it turns out, did get a call from Stallone to join his team of Expendables, but he wasn't thrilled with the pitch. He told TotalFilm, "Stallone gave me a part in his next movie. [He] said, 'You're gonna make lots of money.' I don't want to hear that, I want to hear what was my character. He was unable to tell what it's going to be." So Van Damme, showing admirable dedication to the purity of his craft, passed.

In a 2009 press conference, Van Damme recounted pretty much the same story, adding that he'd advised Stallone that, instead of doing "The Expendables," Stallone should make a movie where Sly plays a "tough priest." According to Van Damme, Stallone found this "insulting." If nothing else, Van Damme does do a pretty nifty Stallone impression.

At this year's Comic-Con, Stallone addressed the casting offers, including two other high-profile no-shows that were not meant to be. His take differs slightly: "I talked to Van Damme. I talked to [Steven] Segal. I even talked to Chuck Norris." He then added, "But there are certain considerations, like insanity."

In fairness to Van Damme, the actor does seem to have a somewhat more introspective take on his career of late. In 2008, he starred in the independent film "JCVD," playing a fictionalized version of himself: an out-of-work action star who finds himself at a bank while it's being robbed. Of course, Van Damme's newfound introspection doesn't explain why he starred in 2009's "Universal Soldier: Regeneration."

"The Expendables," opening this weekend, tells the story of a group of mercenaries who attempt to overthrow the government of a small South American island. In addition to the aforementioned line-up of Stallone, Willis, Schwarzenegger, and Lundgren, Jet Li, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, and Jason Statham join in on the mayhem.

'My Name is Khan' a love story, not about terrorism - Shah Rukh

MUMBAI (Reuters) - Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan says his upcoming film 'My Name is Khan', which pairs him with co-actor Kajol after an on-screen hiatus of eight years, does not have terrorism as its main theme and is mostly a love story.

"This film is first and foremost a love story. In fact this is one of the nicest love stories I have ever participated in – and I have participated in some of the best love stories that have been made here," Khan told reporters on Wednesday night after the first look of the film was released.

Directed by Karan Johar, 'My Name is Khan' tells the story of an autistic man Rizwan Khan (played by Shah Rukh Khan), who is caught in the aftermath of the September 11 militant attacks in the United States.

Khan, co-actor Kajol and Johar are teaming up after more than eight years, in what has been billed as one of the biggest releases to come out of Bollywood in a while.

The film is widely anticipated by fans of Khan and Kajol, whose great on-screen chemistry have helped deliver several hits in the past.

Fox Star Studios has signed a deal to finance and distribute the film, which unconfirmed media reports have pegged at 21 million USD.

However, both Johar and Fox have refused to confirm the figure, which, if true would be the highest ever for a Bollywood film.

"This film will be a step towards Indian cinema reaching worldwide," Khan said. India, home to the world's most prolific movie industry, has long tried to draw wider audiences, including by forging ventures with Hollywood studios looking to offset sluggish box-office sales with new markets and cheaper production costs.

My Name is Khan releases worldwide on February 12, 2010.

The much anticipated series of prequels to the marvel franchise X-Men kicked off with exploring the beginnings of probably one of the most beloved superheroes in the Marvel Universe. Opening in the mid 1800s, young James Howlett is witnessed to his father’s murder at the hands of his best-friend’s father. What initially looks to be a crime of passion turns unto a life altering few minutes for young Howlett, who avenges his father by the use of his unique abilities. Howlett and his best-friend Victor Creed (later to become one of Wolverine’s arch-enemies) are told that they are half-brothers after which they leave their homes with new found regenerative powers. After battling in numerous wars together the two mutants are recruited by Major William Stryker who assembles a team of mutants called Team X (very imaginative). After James realizes the unnecessarily brutal aspect of the team’s conduct he opts to quit the team leaving his brother Creed behind. Wolverine is later dragged back into the thick of the action as the conspiracy unfolds and he seeks revenge for the death of his girlfriend Kayla Silverfox. The film covers the aspects of Wolverine’s name change and adamantium enhancement while adopting a few biographical features from recent graphic novels and even tweaking a bit of his background story in classic Hollywood style. The film sees Hugh Jackman thankfully reprising his role as the gritty and animalistic superhero while new additions such as Liev Shreiber as the future sabretooth, Ryan Reynolds as the wisecracking Deadpool and Taylor Kitsch as Gambit were notable inductees to the Marvel-to-film industry. Jackman largely owes his career to the mutant community and as evident in the film, took his role very seriously. In fact it is hard to picture anyone else playing the clawed hero as he has clearly made it his own. A highlight in the film though was Liev Shreiber’s performance as Victor Creed which was intense to say the least. Reynolds played a very minor role in the film but the alterations made to his character’s story and the fusion of Weapon X and Deadpool were downright criminal. Kitsch employed this year’s worst accent to impersonate a Remmy LeBeau who would have Gambit fans reeling with anger. One aspect of the film that needs mentioning is Will.i.am’s portrayal of John Wraith. I hope it’s safe to say his acting career is hereby over. The film was quite entertaining in its own right but the changes made to Wolverine’s background story will not go down well with Marvel fanatics or any old X-Men fan. The film sacrificed too much of the essence of Wolverine’s past for mere entertainment and the film really didn’t need to do that. However, for all you superhero film fans who don’t care much about accuracy this film is solid fun and entertainment with some memorable scenes to last up until the next superhero flick and is definitely worth a watch.

Blaming the mafia, he seeks out the most notorious mob boss in the city, taking on an army of gangsters that he could not possibly hope to overcome, Max Payne confronts the epitome of crime, but discovers that the mafia is only a pawn for a higher corruption: the power-hungry Aesir Corporation and its criminal activities.

In an attempt to clear his name and settle his past, Max Payne serves as a vigilante to eliminate the source of a new designer drug being trafficked, that of which he believes was responsible for the death of his family.
