ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 has been announced and this time India, Srilanka and Bangladesh are the hosts with Mumbai hosting final of the world cup. World Cup 2011 is starting from 19th February to 2nd April 2011 .Taking lessons from world cup 2007 ICC has divided the teams into two groups-GROUP A and GROPU B. Each group consists of 8 teams and each team will be playing with all the teams in same group and will qualify for quarters. Group A contains Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand, Srilanka, Zimbabwe, Canada, and Kenya while Group B contains India, South Africa, England, West Indies, Bangladesh, Ireland, and Netherlands. The first match will be played between India and Bangladesh at Dhaka on 19th February, 2011. Quarterfinals are scheduled from March 23 to March 26. The 4 winning teams will qualify for semifinals scheduled on 29th and 30th March, 2011 at Colombo and Mohali. Every team is working day and night to grab the prestigious trophy of world cup for its nation and to qualify for the finals which is scheduled at April 2, 2011 in Mumbai, the city of India. Public and also ICC officials are hoping that this time no scandals regarding corruption and match fixing will be seen in Cricket World Cup 2011. The much-hyped grand finale of the Mega Star reality show was marred by hostility and humiliation late on Saturday night after the irate audience at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium turned furious hurling empty bottles and stones on to the stage when the top management of the EAP Group including its chairperson Soma Edirisinghe were preparing to present the Mega Star Trophy to the winner Ajith Weerasinghe.

Angry fans said the whole country believed the trophy was a cakewalk for UNP parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekara who showed consistency right from the beginning of the programme. Dayasiri was placed second, Suresh Gamage third and parliamentarian Upeksha Swarnamali fourth.

A senior police officer who was at the scene claimed the main architect behind this mega programme was also manhandled by some angry fans and he had managed to flee the area with Ms. Edirisinghe.
The Mega Star contest itself took a shocking twist during the past few months amidst allegations of large-scale malpractice and manipulations within the reality singing programme which had 36 participants representing diverse fields. Besides actors and actresses there were three print media journalists, a doctor, a nurse, a police officer, a model and parliamentarians in the singing show.

Analysts said this was probably the first time in history that the finals of a reality programme came to such an embarassing end, with the channel abruptly abandoning its live coverage due to brawls that took place at the venue.

All 36 participants of the Mega Star show were not invited to the grand finale and the channel was unable to give a valid reason for this lapse.

The participants charged the whole show which went on for one year was manipulated by one individual who had the whole programme under his control.

Mega Star winner Ajith Weerasinghe was not reachable for his comments.
Informed sources said the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium had also suffered serious damage due to the commotion.

Earlier last week, a group of leading artistes protested that they had not been invited to the grand finale of the mega reality television event.

A globally renowned film actress who is also known for her singing prowess charged that she and several other participants were subjected to what she called unfair treatment because they spoke openly whenever they saw injustice.

Popular actress Damitha Abeyratne said all participants in this programme were popular figures representing diverse fields like cinema, tele drama, fashion, media, health, police and politics.
“It is therefore the responsibility of the organizers to ensure the dignity of the participants too. We did not even receive an invitation for the final, leave alone participating. We feel this is an injustice from the people’s point of view too. The people obviously expected the show to be a glamorous one with all the participants. Some of our colleagues were run down by the channel just because they spoke out against the unjust acts that were taking place. We can’t fathom the attitude of the organizers for trying to humiliate the very people who boosted their programme,” they said in a frustrating tone.

But the main players of the programme declined to respond to some queries posed at them over those allegations. We asked them if the 36 participants would be invited for the grand finale or not, whether they would be given any performances or not at the finals, whether they would be called up onto the stage and whether any prizes would be given to the 36 stars….

Film sources said instead of inviting the 36 participants, the organizers got senior film stars to take part in a filler event. But many film world personalities asked how the senior stars took part in a programme which blatantly let down and humiliated their junior colleagues.

Despite the final alcking credibility, many people asked why a panel member was praising the main architect of this show, insisting that he was a better organizer than those who organized Bollywood film festivals.

Paul, the oracle octopus who shot to fame in the World Cup this summer for his uncanny ability to predict the results of Germany's soccer matches, has died at his home in Oberhausen at the age of two.

English-born Paul made headlines across the globe after he correctly forecast how Germany would fare in seven matches, before his psychic powers were tested again for the final.

After Germany's semi-final defeat, Paul tipped Spain to beat the Netherlands in the final, which prompted one news agency to report he had spurred a jump in demand for Spanish government bonds. Paul's prediction duly came to pass: Spain won.

Staff at the Oberhausen Sea Life Center in western Germany said in a statement they were "devastated" to learn of Paul's death when they returned to work on Tuesday.

"He appears to have passed away peacefully during the night, of natural causes, and we are consoled by the knowledge that he enjoyed a good life," said the centre's manager Stefan Porwoll.



Before matches, two containers of food were placed in the eight-legged creature's tank, each one bearing the flag of one of the teams about to compete for their chance to become world champions. The container Paul picked first was seen as his pick.

Following the World Cup, a Spanish zoo made a transfer bid for Paul but his German keepers refused to sell.

Paul will be kept in cold storage until the center decides how to mark the mollusc's extraordinary life, Porwoll added.

"We may decide to give Paul his own small burial plot within our grounds and erect a modest permanent shrine," he said.

Paul, who was hatched in Weymouth, England, may yet continue to dazzle the world with predictions from beyond the grave.

A Russian newspaper said in July it had got Paul to predict who would be Russia's next president -- but that the results would be kept secret until the election year of 2012.

Sea Life said Paul would live on as the object of a host of commercial enterprises ranging from special clothing lines to mobile phone applications inspired by his fame in Oberhausen, one of Germany's most cash-strapped cities.

Meanwhile, donations made in honor of Paul's achievements would help to fund a planned permanent rescue center for sea turtles on the Greek island of Zakynthos, Sea Life said.

In "The Expendables," Sylvester Stallone's latest guns-blazing return to the multiplex, the actor/director assembled a dream team of action stars to assist him with the very important work of blowing up everything in sight. Most notably, he recruited onetime big-screen rivals like Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and Dolph Lundgren for his latest cinematic mission. An impressive collective of talent, to be sure, but the all-star roster of shoot-'em-up heroes has at least one glaring omission: Jean-Claude Van Damme. Whither the "Muscles from Brussels," star of "Hard Target," "Timecop," and "Universal Solider"?

Van Damme, it turns out, did get a call from Stallone to join his team of Expendables, but he wasn't thrilled with the pitch. He told TotalFilm, "Stallone gave me a part in his next movie. [He] said, 'You're gonna make lots of money.' I don't want to hear that, I want to hear what was my character. He was unable to tell what it's going to be." So Van Damme, showing admirable dedication to the purity of his craft, passed.

In a 2009 press conference, Van Damme recounted pretty much the same story, adding that he'd advised Stallone that, instead of doing "The Expendables," Stallone should make a movie where Sly plays a "tough priest." According to Van Damme, Stallone found this "insulting." If nothing else, Van Damme does do a pretty nifty Stallone impression.

At this year's Comic-Con, Stallone addressed the casting offers, including two other high-profile no-shows that were not meant to be. His take differs slightly: "I talked to Van Damme. I talked to [Steven] Segal. I even talked to Chuck Norris." He then added, "But there are certain considerations, like insanity."

In fairness to Van Damme, the actor does seem to have a somewhat more introspective take on his career of late. In 2008, he starred in the independent film "JCVD," playing a fictionalized version of himself: an out-of-work action star who finds himself at a bank while it's being robbed. Of course, Van Damme's newfound introspection doesn't explain why he starred in 2009's "Universal Soldier: Regeneration."

"The Expendables," opening this weekend, tells the story of a group of mercenaries who attempt to overthrow the government of a small South American island. In addition to the aforementioned line-up of Stallone, Willis, Schwarzenegger, and Lundgren, Jet Li, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, and Jason Statham join in on the mayhem.

Contrary to reports of a New Zealand honeymoon, Col Alhawat confirms that the two will be leaving for Sri Lanka instead, “No, they are not going to New Zealand. They will be leaving for Sri Lanka together.”

The Indian team will also be leaving for Sri Lanka today from Chennai. Dhoni’s wedding reception, it is said, will be organised in a grand manner only after the team’s return from Sri Lanka.

According to sources, “A grand wedding reception will take place in Mumbai at the ITC Maurya Sheraton Hotel which will include a guestlist of 300 people. The guestlist will include people from the corporate world, Bollywood and, of course, the cricketing world.

Melodious voice of Hettiarachchige Reginald Jothipala took most of our youth into a dream world for he held a record of singing the most number of love songs and love duets. At the time of his untimely death on July 7, 1987 at the age of 51 years, he was the uncrowned playback maestro of the Sinhala screen.

He was born to the family of H.R. James and Ahaliyagoda H. K. Podinona Perera on Feb. 121936 at Katawalamulla. He was the oldest in a family of five and was a product of St. Lawrence’s College, Maradana and St. John’s College, Dematagoda.

He had neither pursued music as a subject in his school career nor since his completion of studies. He had the habit of spending his time at tea kiosks or community centres listening to the radio in enjoying the other vocalists as he did not possess a radio set at home. However, his passion for music swept him into the real track.

This idol of the common man spoke all three languages, Sinhala, English and Tamil and was born with a sharp tongue for music. He had an advantage over many other playback singers in that he had a stable voice and proper Sinhala diction and more importantly a voice suitable as a playback singer. However, he became an essential part of commercial formula films as the playback voice for matinee idols.

Artistes, film stars etc., may come and go but barely a handful of them remain immortalized in the hearts and minds of the people. Although 23 years have elapsed since his demise, his songs are still among the most demanded numbers in the hearts and minds of the people of this country. He is an artiste never to be forgotten.

To my knowledge, he was first aligned with Wasantha Sandanayake and G. S. B. Rani Perera at Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and began his career as a vocalist, singing duets. He presented a song ‘Siriyame Sara’ to the film ‘Surathalee’ of Cyril P. Abeyratne of which music was directed by T. R. Pana. He rendered his voice to all classes of actors ranging from Eddie Jayamanne, Ananda Jayaratne, Gamini Fonseka, Vijaya Kumaratunge, Ravindra Randeniya, Sanath Gunathilaka, to the younger generation of actors, such as, Damith Fonseka and Lal Weerasinghe.

In the film ‘Sandesaya’ of the doyen of Sri Lankan cinema, Lester James Peiris, he sang the popular number ‘Puruthugeesikaraya Ratawal Allanna Suraya’ with Sydney Atygalle and some others, to the tunes composed by the reputed musician Sunil Santha and lyrics written by veteran lyricist Arisen Ahubudu.

Since then he shot up to the highly competitive field of playback singing through sacrifice, dedication, humility and patience. He sang ‘Man ava, hira bath kala lakap oken ringala’ to the film ‘Sri 296’. He reigned in the Sinhala film industry as a playback singer for two decades from 1965 to 1987.

He successfully completed the 150th one man show, ‘Jothi Rathriya’, which coincided with his birth anniversary just before his demise. He also performed in Singapore, Malaysia, England - London, the USA, Canada, the Middle East, Italy - Rome. The great musician who sang last with Latha Walpola and enriched the cinema world, also won several awards in recognition of his singing talents.

He was interested in being a singer and not an actor. However, he acted in a number of films and contributed 330 songs to films. The last film in which he included a song was ‘Supiri Balawatha’ which was released in 2007.

Once, the celebrated Indian singer Mohamed Rafi said that Jothipala should have been born in India, as Sri Lanka was too small a country, to enable him to be rocketed into the international sphere.

He had performed in 242 concerts, the Jothipala Fan Club named ‘Jothi Mithuru Samajaya’. This series was launched in 1971. He married Winter - a nurse by profession. They had four children. In the last days of his life, he had uttered, ‘I will not live long. I won’t feel sorry for an early death’. Further he had said, ‘Sing my songs depicting the virtues of love and romance.’
